INTRODUCTION:

My relationship with homebrewing did not get off to the best of starts. I was plenty eager and I had a lot of shiny new equipment, but an hour after returning from my first trip to the homebrew store, I felt completely and utterly baffled. I was also not in the kitchen; I was sitting on the couch in my living room with three different, slightly contradictory sets of brewing instructions laid out on the coffee table before me. My husband was tackling this new hobby with me, and neither of us had any idea where to begin or which instructions to follow or even how to move off the couch.

Once we formed a plan of action, the situation (unfortunately) did not improve. The liquid malt extract we’d purchased was roughly the consistency of tar and wouldn’t come out of the container. Our beer juice (which some, though not all, instructions mysteriously referred to as “wort”) took forever to come to a boil. And once it did, it continued to boil right over the side of the pot, extinguishing the burner’s pilot light and making a gigantic mess. My husband and I argued about whether the batch was ruined or if we could just add some more water and carry on—the first of many such stressed-out and frustration-fueled fights to follow. To date, some of our most ferocious battles as a married couple have happened while brewing beer.

Better Beer Brewing!

I love this book! I used it as a companion to thekitchn.com's Beer School (also by Emma Christensen). Very complete and detailed, plus beautiful pictures. The thing that most distinguishes this book from other very good brewing books is that Emma gives recipes for (and excellent reasons for) brewing 1 gallon batches. I would never have gotten into brewing if I had to start with a 5 gallon batch, but I have already made two different beers and am looking forward to making more!

Not what I expected, but pleasantly surprised.

It was not at all what I expected. I was looking for a somewhat technical homebrewing book; this book is mostly recipes and elementary concepts -- but it made me really excited to brew a wider variety of styles. The four beers I've brewed based off these principles have turned out wonderfully.

Nice intro and terminology. The steps mentioned lack detail and visuals. This is helpful to the very beginner but shortly into the reading it becomes too basic even for those who have never brewed before .

This is the second edition of a companion handbook to Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology, 6th edition, Barakat et al., with an emphasis on summary information, key points, and treatment algorithms. 

This is an excellent quick resource and introduction to gynecologic oncology. The summary and key points are extremely valuable and the references are high yield. The tables that summarize landmark studies are extremely helpful and the use of figures to show survival curves is a key feature. The handbook covers key topics from the parent textbook, organized by chapters covering each of the major cancer sites: cervix, vulva, vagina, uterus, ovary, and fallopian tube. Individual chapters are dedicated to chemotherapy, radiation, preinvasive lesions, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. The purpose is to provide an introduction to the basics of oncology practice and the latest advances in the field of gynecologic oncology. The handbook emphasizes introductory and summary information on major cancer sites. In this study – as in all the other studies in the Authenticity series – we shall not merely allow the Book of Joshua to speak for itself, but shall listen very carefully to the many witnesses of old who are happy to testify to its authenticity. And we shall not just consider the macro-evidence of archaeology which the critics have too readily – and all too hastily – dismissed. We shall make our special study all those microscopic, unsuspected and sometimes hidden details which are there to be found, details which no forger could ever hope to have got right, and of which he could never have been aware.
It is of immense importance that the authenticity of the Book of Joshua is made plain for all to see. For far too long the critics have held sway over the subject with the most outrageous lies and misrepresentations concerning Joshua. For the past 150 years and more, they have insidiously undermined the Book in the public’s eye, using nothing more than baseless insinuations and distortions which no other academic field would ever tolerate. Using a form of ‘scholarship’ which is at best a sloppy parody of learning, and at worst an outright and shameless deception, they have concealed evidence from the public which would readily have exonerated the Book of Joshua. That is why the presentation of what follows in this study is of such importance.

Each book is massively documented and each book contains compelling evidence that the portion of the Bible being discussed, really is what it claims to be. The liberal scholarship that tries to say that the Bible was composed hundreds of years after the fact is thoroughly debunked by Dr Cooper's work. A hidden treasure of straight-forward inspiration

I read this book for the first time back in 1980 when Steven R Covey was not a household name. It helped me to ACT where I had previously only THOUGHT about making changes in my life. I found that for me, it was a life changing event. I read it again in 2001 and it had the same effect. It amazes me that the council and advice offered within would be as applicable today as in 1980. That's the power of this book. It was deeper and wider than imagined and I believe it to be one of the best self-help books of all time when dealing with life in a spiritual realm.

Yosano Akiko (1878-942) is one of the most famous Japanese writers of the twentieth century. She is the author of more than seventy-five books, including twenty volumes of original poetry and the definitive translation into modern Japanese of the Tale of the Genji. Although probably best known for her exquisite erotic poetry, Akiko's work also championed the causes of feminism, pacifism, and social reform. Akiko's poetry is profoundly direct, often passionate, exposing the complexity of everyday emotions in poetic language stripped of artifice and presenting the full breadth of her poetic vision. Included are ninety-one of Akiko's tanka (a traditional five-line form of verse) and a dozen of her longer poems written in the modern style.

In her lifetime, Akiko published seventy-five books, among them twenty volumes of poetry, along with a definitive modern Japanese translation of the classic Tales of Genji.

"A pioneering feminist, pacifist, and social reformer, her passions were intensely reflected in her literary work, reviving tanka—a form similar to the sonnet—to renewed lyrical essence, creating a unique style of true emotional directness. Given the enormity if reverberative effects in Akiko's poems, Hamill and Matsui Gibson's translations are crisp and incisive, with judicious care given the limits of English syntax. The ninety-one tanka and dozen modern style longer poems translated maintain a sustained pitch of such deeply engaged feeling that one almost reaches Zen-like union with Akiko's mind.

Erotic wonder

So rarely do we Westerners hear women's poetry from Asia that books like this can be eye opening experiences.
Akiko was a famed poet in the early twentieth century and her poems still gleam and breathe after all these years.

Bare bones: one of 20th century Japan's finest

Have always been a fan of her stuff, esp. the tanka. the translation by Sam Hamill & Keiko Matsui Gibson the best I've yet seen. Illustrations by Addiss a real plus.

A different view of Japanese poetry

This volume of poetry has the same high quality one has come to expect of Sam Hamill. It is enhanced by brush and ink illustrations by Stephen Addiss and a brief biographic introduction to the poem Yosano Akiko.
The most jarring poems are the twelve in modern style - jarring in the sense of being furthest from the reader's expectations. "Women Are Plunder" is a feminist poem opening with the image of a department store sale as a universal call to women. "The Town of Amazement" describes a Utopia - one without student plays - in which the power structure (political, educational, legal, religious. famial) is leveled. "Cold Supper" explores family financial troubles, a plight frequent in the poet's life. "You Shall Not Be Killed, Brother!" is a pacifist poem. Most of these modern poems are relatively time bound - interesting but ephemeral with some exceptions.
The poems written in the traditional tanka form, however, are more universal exploring sensuality, sexuality, religion ... An example: "On her cheek and mine, / although our minds so differ, / like utter strangers, / the pine winds blow equally - / almost as though we were friends." In these poems one sees a genius transforming traditional image and form into something new, expressing experience previously hidden and confronting the changing views of society.
