Worth a look

This is a review of Chapter 1 only, entitled Quantum Measurement Theory. Normally, I wouldn't post a review based solely on such a small part, but I am making an exception because the first chapter impressed me so favorably and there are no other reviews about two years after its publication.

For a paper I am writing, I needed a published reference to the theory of quantum measurement operators in the form that I intended to use it. The only reference I knew was the book of Nielsen and Chuang, "Quantum Computation and Quantum Information". Though a generally excellent book, I was not satisfied with its treatment of measurement operators. Searching the web, I came across an early version of the first Chapter of Jacob's book, which turned out to be almost exactly what I was looking for.

There ought to be many good treatments of measurement operators by now, some thirty-odd years after its introduction in the seminal book of Karl Kraus, "States, effects, and operations". Probably there are, but Jacobs' is the only one that I have seen.

The Chapter is clear and well written. The essence of its mathematical treatment is essentially the way I would do it were I writing an introduction to measurement operators. However, I think it would be more useful for advanced readers if it were written in the language and notation of operators on Hilbert spaces rather than matrices.

Its intended audience is graduate students in physics. They should be able, and encouraged if not, to think more abstractly than in terms of matrices with numerical entries. A more abstract view may be harder at first, but once mastered makes so many things so much easier. It is because the chapter is written in the language of numerical-entried matrices that I gave it 4 instead of the maximum 5 stars.

In summary, I think this book is worth a look for anyone who wants to learn quantum measurement theory.

Letters everyone must read

There are two editions of "Letters My Mother Never Read", the green version is the abridged copy. Reading this version deprives the reader of Jerri's poetry, family photos, and legal documents that support this incredible story. That said, the green copy will not lessen the emotional turmoil the reader will experience as Jerri recounts her life story. From the step-grandmother who fed her cookies and milk one month and relegated her to life in the coal cellar and the yard only a few months later, to the foster mothers who would not allow her in the house, to coping as a college student with no place to go when the dorms closed for breaks, Jerri explains how even the most basic concepts of how to use a telephone could be alien to someone who has who has been raised without role models and relegated to non-human status. This book is a must for foster children who may have thought that no one could ever understand, a must for educators who may realize that a student needs help, a must for social workers to read of people who have slipped through the cracks, and a must for children and parents to realize they have what others only dream of. If this books needs a tagline, it would be "this book should be on Oprah."

About the Author

Michael V. Russo is the Charles H. Lundquist Professor of Sustainable Management at the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon. He also serves as Founding Director of the Sustainable Supply Chain Management Center at the Lundquist College. A registered professional civil engineer, he spent several years commercializing alternative energy while at Pacific Gas and Electric Company. He came to Oregon after receiving his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989.

Mike’s academic research focuses on the interaction of national and international environmental, social, and political policies, and strategic management. His articles have appeared in leading scholarly journals, and his research on the bottom-line effects of corporate greening received the 1998 Moskowitz Prize in Social Investing. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation to study international voluntary environmental regulation under the ISO 14000 standards and from the Dreyfus Foundation to write business cases that incorporate green chemistry issues. One case written under the Dreyfus Foundation grant and included in this collection, “Seventh Generation: Balancing Customer Expectations with Supply Chain Realities,” won the 2007 oikos Sustainability Case Writing Competition.

Mike is actively involved in profession service. Currently, he serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, and Organization & Environment. In 2005, he completed his term as Chair of the Organizations and Natural Environment Interest Group of the Academy of Management.

Mike lives in Eugene with his wife Wendy and their sons Andy and David. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities, reading, the arts, and a good bottle of red wine. A native San Franciscan, he is increasingly sure that his tombstone will read, “Have the Giants Won the World Series Yet?”

It recognizes the difficulty of making change, but shows why change is necessary. My only wish is in the proportioning of the material. I'd like to see more cases and a little less of some of the historical/ theoretical material since the cases are likely to be the most useful to practitioners and students of business. Not everyone in the corporate world is there yet, but the movement for more sustainable business practice is growing as leaders such as Ray Anderson speak out acknowledging the impacts--positive and negative--that companies like his can have on environment and society, and the concomitant imperative of businesses to take responsiblity for what they do. You only have to read the business press to understand that "sustainability" in all its different guises is here to stay. This book can help you see where the business sustainability movement is at, and where it's likely to go.

Nice / broad based overview of environmental matters for business

Russo's Environmental Management book is a good primer on many issues concerning the environment today. I use it as the base text (which I expand on) in both my undergrad and master's environmental strategy courses. Overall, I think it's a nice mix of established 'thought pieces', more modern perspectives, and nicely done cases for discussion and analysis. The only downside for me is that this book covers such a wide range of material, that we use comparatively little of it in a semester. However, the book can double as a great post course reference for those wishing to learn more. One note to clarify, this is not a technical book. If that's what you want, you should look elsewhere. But, it provides a great overview of several pertinent areas of the environment and business in one place.

This is a GREAT book!!

This is a great book! It is easy to use, students like the role-plays and the journal-writing is effective. After being a middle school guidance counselor for over 10 years, it is great to find such a product that is so easy to use. Easy to duplicate handouts and so very effective with this population. I would highly recommend this!
