The lectures reveal that Rank, much maligned by orthodox analysts, invented the modern object-relations approach to psychotherapy in the 1920s. Emancipatory Book

There are several great introductions to the work of Otto Rank, the biography by James Lieberman is outstanding, Jessie Taft's biographical study is also very interesting. Ira Progroff's chapters on Rank in "Death and Rebirth of Psychology" brilliant, and Ernest Becker's two chapters on Rankian psychology are important and useful. The recently published "The Letters of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank: Inside Psychoanalysis" (2012) is also most interesting and wonderful (edited and introduced by Lieberman and Kramer, the two foremost experts on Otto Rank).
However, it is this volume, written my Rank himself that surpasses them all. These are short lectures Rank delivered between 1924 and 1938. Together, these essay/lectures introduce the reader to all of Rank's basic ideas. They are incredibly accessible and very enjoyable.
The short forward by Rollo May is interesting, and the longer introduction by Robert Kramer is fantastic.
James Lieberman in his amazon review says that much of Otto Rank anticipates modern mainstream psychology. This is very true. However, the importance of Otto Rank is that he is still well ahead of contemporary mainstream psychology. Indeed Otto Rank is far more than a psychologist; he is a social theorist second to no other in human history.
The reason to pick-up and read the work of Otto Rank is not merely an interest in the history of psychological thought, but an invitation to superb social theory, still unsurpassed.
I urge you to pick-up this volume as an accessible introduction, and reference, to the ideas of Otto Rank, but Rank's real genius is only found in his mature work, Will Therapy, Truth and Reality, Psychology and the Soul, Modern Education, Art and the Artist, and Beyond Psychology.
As good as the essays/lectures in A Psychology of Difference are, they do not fully capture the richness and brilliance of Rank's genius.
The liquid secular world now needs Otto Rank more than ever. His ideas, therapeutic practices, and praxis have the potential to heal both individuals and very ill societies. Indeed, what we learn from Rank is the healing is always occurring, mainly being carried-out by the creative-types (ignored by Freud and mainstream psychology), those who are able to not allow themselves to identify too strongly with conventions, but differentiate and development themselves (more indepenently from society and conventions) through creativity (Art, Spiritual imagination, Intellectual endeavors, Play, etc.) and engagement with nature and the Cosmos.
Rank is emancipation and liberation.

Otto Rank's charismatic sanity

This collection of talks given by psychologist Otto Rank in the U.S. is the best introduction to a major 20th century thinker. Less gifted as a writer than as a conversationalist, Rank has not won a large following with his other books, important as they are. His break with Freud put him on the psychoanalytic "enemies" list, but Rank's thinking anticipates much of what is now mainstream: here-and-now, relationship, will, creativity. Editor Robert Kramer has done a great job.
