The descriptions are lush and deliciously physical, you can almost feel their touch on your skin...

This story couldn’t help but be hot (I mean, it’s right there in the blurb!), but it isn’t JUST hot. The reporter who tells the story is not, despite her beauty, a person who can resist looking for answers and deeper motivations. This makes the tension almost unbearable, and then you get to the good part but it turns out the tension isn’t over, either, and it just keeps going and going and going till it seems like you have to look away from the book, except you CAN’T.
The descriptions are lush and deliciously physical, you can almost feel their touch on your skin, their breath stirring your hair... Points for a cute ending to all the hotness, too, I wasn’t expecting it.

HOT despite the taboo

HOT, but difficult for me to get behind due to the type of taboo. The characters were developed, but the priest kind of EEKED me out - despite his appearance and experience. I had a difficult time not seeing the collar and the devil spurring him on even though he deserves love too. The two together were quite sexy - add in the third and the hotness level burned down the house. This was written well with developed characters and the story flowed seamlessly. I would read more from Isabelle, but I will personally steer clear of priests in books for my reading sanity.

How can you control something that you are not conscious of like the subconscious

This book just changed my opinion about the Law of Attraction and made it seem so much more possible now. He claims that many of us are being controlled by our minds instead of controlling our minds. I found that especially enlightening because I've never really thought about it that way. How can you control something that you are not conscious of like the subconscious? Also, he explains why two people with the same desires do not get the same results (that chapter on karma blew my mind).

I liked how he acknowledges that he is not a scientist and doesn't try to force in science into his views, although he does show some examples from fields such as psychology to supplement his claims.

I felt a lot of care in the book, Nathan keeps cautioning us against the wrong use of the LOA and how it can turn out wrong and make the situation worse if we do not know what we are doing.

In case anyone was wondering, I've tried the plan he advocates and indeed, my life seems so much abundant now. No other New thought author actually teaches you HOW to be abundant! Nathan actually tells the mindset behind this abundance and how it relates to spiritual development as well.

If I could complain about anything, it was that sometimes the headings looked a bit "off" on my Kindle, but that's because I increased the font-size. Otherwise, this is a very fascinating read that you should try.

I love Esther Hicks, Bashar and Neville Goddard books and I feel that this book itself is great as it synthesizes a lot of confusing bits together into a coherent piece.

Unlike any other manifestation book

This was a powerful book. As the author, Nathan Miller states, it does have the very real possibility of its teachings backfiring dangerously if you don't read EVERY one of his sections in order. I don't say this to scare anyone, but we are powerful beings, and Nathan's truths convey that. Manual to manifestation is unlike any other book. Most manifestations books talk about abundance and 'feeling good' to attract what you want and only superficially. This one goes into depth, and dispels many myths and fallacies many 'gurus' espouse. Miller talks about desire, its incredible power, and how it relates to our thoughts in the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious. If you truly want to manifest a certain way of living, read this book and follow it to the letter. Five stars.

Great book, I have been visualizing for a while and attracted many positive things in my life, but I am constantly trying to perfect my techniques. This book has been very eye opening, it has defined many things which I knew on an unconscious level. Systematic Manifestation should be the book to replace "The Secret".. If you want to start visualizing effectively, get this book, you won't go wrong, it will guide you step by step on manisfesting anything you want. After seven months of treatment, the psychiatrist decided that neither of his patients was psychotic, and that both consciously and under hypnosis, hey told what they believed to be the absolute truth.

It included the actual transcriptions of the tapes made of their testimony under hypnosis, as well as the sketches they drew, both in and out of trance, of the spacecraft and humanoid creatures. Still fascinating after all these years.

I had heard about the Hill's experience many, many years ago and I often wondered if it was really true what happened to them. My own personal opinion now, after reading this book, is that it did indeed happen.I could not turn the pages fast enough. There is no way that two people could have such intricate details of an event like that and be making it up. Surely someone along the way would have seen through them. I lived in the White Mountains for a few years and being familiar with the area of occurrence made the book an even better read. The Hill's are intelligent and educated, their story is one of a kind. If you don't believe now, you will after you read this book. If the tops of your shoes get scuffed and you don't know how they got that way, you'd better check your watch !

Classic study of a landmark case from the 1960s

At the time of first publication in 1966 the story of Betty and Barney Hill's alleged abduction by extraterrestrials whilst driving home from Montreal to Portsmouth through the White Mountains of New Hampshire on the night of 19 September 1961, as told in this book by journalist John Fuller, was highly controversial and remains so to this day due to the unassailable character of the couple and the corroborative evidence which has never been convincingly refuted.

This mixed-race couple were pillars of the community: intelligent, educated, professional, church-going, active in the civil rights movement. The last thing they wanted, or needed, was to court the kind of negative publicity which might reasonably be expected to accompany such an outlandish and improbable tale.

All they initially remembered from the night in question was being pursued by a bright light, later identified as a large disk-shaped craft with strange humanoid figures observable through the windows, as they drove the quiet road south through the mountains (on later reporting the sighting to the local USAF base it transpired that this craft had been reported by many other people in the area the same night). They arrived home two hours later than anticipated with a sense of unease. The car trunk had some unexplained shiny round marks, and when a compass was placed near these marks it unaccountably spun round and round; Barney's shoes were heavily scuffed on the tops of the toes as though he had been dragged over rough ground with his feet dangling, Betty's dress was inexplicably torn and had some very unusual stains and they both remembered hearing a `beeping' sound coinciding with the UFO sighting at two different times during the journey.

Persistent nightmares and the emergence of what we might now term `post-traumatic stress' symptoms led the Hills eventually to seek medical help. The therapeutic hypnotist who treated them, Dr. Benjamin Simon, was a respected physician in Boston who had successfully treated ex-servicemen for combat trauma. He had no interest in the UFO phenomenon, no knowledge of `alien abduction' (there were no reported cases in the public domain at that time) and was astounded to uncover mutually corroborative and supporting accounts of a complex abduction by apparent extraterrestrials from each of the Hills, who were regressed separately and carefully managed so they could not communicate their memories to each other. The Hills themselves, when they heard their taped sessions, had a hard time coming to terms with it all and initially refused to believe their own memories. Simon remained skeptical, even though he could not shake the recovered memories and in fact they explained all the symptoms (there were physical and anatomical symptoms for both the Hills following the incident).

John Fuller's book tells the whole story of this case, simultaneously investigated by the local US Air Force base, by NICAP and other organizations, and later serialised and sensationalised in the national press. The Hills became reluctant celebrities, and this unlooked-for fame brought them many problems. Betty survived Barney by many years, and subsequent paranormal incidents followed on the heels of the landmark White Mountains abduction.

This is not of itself the `best' book ever written on the alien abduction phenomenon, but it's an essential classic and an object lesson in how to carry out an investigation properly whilst not allowing prejudice born of personal beliefs to deny the uncomfortable evidence as it emerges, but to remain skeptical and true to the scientific method. The reader should keep in mind that this was all new in 1966, the first time such a possibility had ever been entertained and no-one has ever been able to `debunk' the accumulated evidence.

A good companion volume to `The Interrupted Journey' for a deeper understanding of this important case is the more recent `Captured!' written by Kathy Marden (Betty Hill's niece) with contributions from Stanton Friedman.

Reading this book was like watching A Hard Day's Night and recognizing the launching of an era. I have read all of Budd Hopkins' books, which are quite enjoyable and/or upsetting. Now I have discovered the granddaddy of all alien abductee regressive hypnosis transcibed sessions books.
Fuller gives the reader the necessary background information, then offers the original (edited for relevancy) transcripts from the psychiatriist's files. What a great thing it is that these sessions were tape recorded. The Hills weren't the first to be taken, but they were the first to go public, although unwillingly.
It is amusing in hindsight to read the doctor's repeated attempts to get Barney to admit that the entire encounter was a dream - if not his dream, then surely Betty's, which he somehow absorbed. Barney wants so much to believe that it was, but under hypnosis, he can only call it as he sees it.
The Interrupted Journey is a classic of UFO-related literature. It will remain fringe material so long as the UFO reality is under wraps, but when the buggers are finally outed, this book will go mainstream and become required reading.

Student Solutions is a MUST HAVE

I am getting ready to take a statistics class and wanted to be as prepared as I possibly could. I have hired a tutor and she suggested that I order the student manual. I didn't know there was such a thing. Without this manual I would be lost. That is no exaggeration. When I can't figure something out, I look in this manual so I can learn and understand the problems. Anyone taking the Introductory Statistics class MUST get this manual. It is so worth the money, you will get it back ten times over.

The light at the end of the statistical tunnel...

"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." So quoth Mark Twain, allegedly. After this class, it's likely you'll agree with him. Or, in the parlance of statisticians, "I am 95% confident that there is a 0.000% possibility of finding a book as extreme or more so than this one, if this book does not help with homework."

THAT'S why Stats is one of the toughest things to get your head around - the double-negative ways of referring to things, such as the Ho and Ha hypotheses: for this book, Ho (also called 'the null hypothesis'), would be:

Ho: This book does not help with homework assignments.
Ha: This book does help with homework assignments.

So, the conclusion would be:

Without this book, you are on your own, up the creek without a paddle, and if you're like me, and math in general is challenging, this book is a Godsend. Buy it. :)

If you want to improve your writing skills for print or the web, this is the book that you need to own. This book is all steak with the fat trimmed off, powerful tips and techniques with absolutely no fluff.

While some of the techniques included in the book aren't unique to copywriting guides, Bly offers his own effective spin on them. In the first 60 pages alone, you're treated to a goldmine of tips on writing effective headlines and crafting easy-to-read copy. Bly tackles copywriting methods for direct mail, catalogs, brochures, websites, and even press releases. Unlike most books on copy, Bly provides great advice on writing for TV commercials and radio spots.

As a Search Engine Optimization guru, I found Bly's take on writing web copy to be extremely refreshing, even if it wasn't new information to me personally. I loved that this was probably the only copywriting book that actually stresses finding the balance between writing copy that sells, and copy that is search engine friendly. Most web design books don't discuss copywriting, and most copywriting authors have no knowledge of writing for search engines. Bly certainly did his homework.

This is an excellent guide for writing copy, especially if you're writing for websites. This book is probably the best investment that you will ever make.

The best nuts and bolts guide for writing effective ad copy

This book is mainly geared towards people wanting to learn hard sell direct response advertising. Sales letters and web advertising are its main focus. There are chapters on other forms of advertising such as brochures and white papers, but IMHO there are other more effective books on soft sell methods.

As for the comments dinging the Bly on his comments about creative advertising... Yes, there is a place for creativity in advertising, but the creativity should never obscure the main purpose of advertising, which is to sell products. As a copywriter, your job is to write the words that get people to pull out their wallets and buy. Are there ads that are both effective and creative? Of course. However, for a copywriter, effective should always come before creative. Never forget that you're playing with other peoples' money, and advertisers want the best bang for their buck.

Note that there have been some revisions for the 3rd edition. The section on computer equipment have been removed. No big loss there, since by definition the technology would be outdated by the time the book went to print. The chapter on freelancing has also been omitted, since Bly devotes an entire book to freelancing, Secrets of a Freelance Writer.

The knock that some reviewers gave on this book is that its just contains basic copywriting principles for beginners. Have you guys noticed a lot of the print and television advertising? Mostly cute, gimmicky filler that doesn't do the job of selling products. I remember a few years ago when the media blasted the SaleGenie.com Super Bowl ads for "not being entertaining enough" and being a "major fail." Many media outlets blasted SalesGenie.com for running ineffective ads and not knowing who their target audience is. They were wrong and so are the reviewers who criticized this book. By the way, SalesGenie.com GAINED 10,000 SUBSCRIBERS by Monday morning --the very next day. That was over $21 million in annual subscription sales. So much for not knowing their target market and target audience. It wasn't a cute commercial, but it was great sales copy that targeted underperforming sales professionals looking to gain a competitive edge over their peers. In fact, the SaleGenie.com commercial had the best ad copy, and it followed many of the principles explained in this book.

The Copywriter's Handbook will break down the anatomy of what's behind writing a good ad and how to construct good ad copy that sells products. Many copywriting books will tell you to use a bunch of techniques, but never explain the how or why about it. This is why there's so much inconsistent, bad ad copy proliferating. The author helps you understand why you must follow certain principles of constructing ad copy, and why certain techniques work. If you buy this book and actually read and comprehend what's in this book, you will learn how to write better ad copy.

Simplest diet ever, especially for the Insulin Resistant crowd

If you look in the mirror and you're fat, you are probably insulin resistant. I was diagnosed with this condition a year ago. The dietician I saw gave me a very complex, difficult to follow diet. I've been looking for an easier plan and this is it. My dietician was prescribing way too many bread and rice carbs for me and it wasn't working. A Week in the Zone is a brief overview of The Zone Diet. This overview is easy to read and the plan is very easy to implement. My husband and I are already feeling better and he lost 2 lbs the first week. This is a very practical meal design, not a fad diet. The "zone" simply refers to keeping glucose and insulin levels in a safe range. My dietician had said that if I get my insulin levels in balance then the weight will come off. I'm looking forward to seeing these results. It is not a fast weight loss plan. Rather a meal design that is all about balancing veggie carbs, lean protein, and good fats for overall health.

Losing some weight already

I bought this with Mastering the Zone. I needed to change my eating habits because I end up having to take steroids a lot because I have churg-strauss syndrome. With steroids comes weight gain. It's horrible! I always try to limit what I eat when I am on them, but it just never seems to work, and the weight just keeps piling on. I started this summer at 118, and I got up to 138, which is a lot for me because I am very small. I started following the concepts in this book, and I have already lost 6 pounds in about 2 weeks. I have always had a fast metabolism, but the steroids like shut it off. It's like this program has kicked my metabolism back into gear. The great thing is is that I am never hungry. The calorie count is down, but the amount of food compensates for that by using more fruits and vegetables. I feel great, and the steroids aren't winning anymore.

The one eating program that really, really works.

If you have a weight problem, bad eating habits, or feel like the food you eat gives you more problems than it's supposed to, then this is the book for you. I had problems with my weight, very poor acne-prone skin and very low energy levels since I was fourteen. I tried every program and diet I could find, and the most weight I ever lost, without downright starving myself, was about 10 pounds over a period of four to six months. I was always depressed and anxious over dieting, and most diets worked horrors for my immunological system, energy, skin, hair and nails. By following the Zone as explained in this book, although making my own Zone recipes, I have lost eight pounds in two weeks and feel better than ever. I haven't gotten sick, my energy levels are soaring, and I'm eating the foods I like without ever being hungry. The condition of my skin, hair and nails is at an all-time best.
The Zone is a very easy to follow eating plan, (I was used to it by the third day) based on combining different foods in the proportions that add up the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fat you should consume at each meal. By making use of meal timing it insures proper delivery of the nutrients to your body, and by including a couple of Zone balanced snacks between meals, it minimizes carbohydrate cravings and hunger.
The book is very easy to understand. A fine introduction to the discipline of software architecture

Software Architecture: Foundations, Theory, and Practice is a landmark text that will become an essental introduction to the discipline of software systems architecture. If you are a student, tester, manager, methodologist, developer, or simply an architect, and want a holistic understanding of what real software architects think software architecture is and why it matters, this is the place to start.

I bought this after Roy Fielding (of REST and HTTP fame) mentioned it on the rest-discuss mailing list. Roy is one of the industry's top architects, and I wasn't disappointed. The book is timely - architecture is coming to be accepted as an important activity, especially for distributed, and large scale systems. What many people don't realize is that drawing pictures, writing documents no-one reads, meta-modeling, and pontificating on "concerns" are not software architecture. Software architecture is about introducing constraints via principled, objective design to achieve particular system properties. Architecture is difficult and exhausting work, but done well can offer immense value to users and stakeholders. This book, along with Rozanski and Woods' "Software Systems Architecture: Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives" makes that explicit.

The book is unapologetic about software architecture's standing in the industry. SAFTAP positions architecture as the primary design activity for software - not development, not requirements analysis, not testing, not methodology, but architecture. That will make for interesting debate.

My single criticism of this book is that it does not do enough to treat user experience (Ux) and informatics as architecturally significant, but not enough to take away a star. I'm hoping a future edition will rectify that.

Some noteworthy chapters in the book (there are 17 chapters in all):

* The Big Idea: explains what architecture is and why it matters. The building metaphor (often heavily criticised in the industry, see the excellent "Software is not Bricks" by Raganwald) is dealt with calmly and then put to one side.

* Architecture in Context: explains how architecture fits into the overall lifecycle and process of software systems.

* Connectors: this is one of my favourite chapters. The concept of a connector is vital to a software system, but is rarely if ever discussed in programming or engineering texts.

* Modeling: probably not what you think. This chapter emphasizes communication, clarity and disambiguation over notations and diagrams.

* Implementation: programmers hate the quip "implementation detail", but in truth many things in a system are just that and it does not mean they are unimportant. This chapter covers those details and why they matter.

* Deployment and Mobility: good architects understand that a systems have a life well beyond initial delivery, which is where most developers, managers and stakeholders tend to focus attention. This was one of favorite sections as the running system simply doesn't get enough attention in most projects today.

* Applied architecture and Styles: covers some examples of architectural styles, notably REST and SOA, which are certainly the best known architectures in my part of the industry.

* Designing for non-functional properties: many non-functional concerns don't start to matter until the system is deployed and there isn't always agreement among technical specialists over what's truly important. If you are technical specialist this should help you articulate the cost/benefit of looking at the "unfeatures" of a system.

* Security and Trust: software is increasingly distributed, and increasingly a super-system of components interacting over the Internet and Mobile Networks. So it's good to see a text that makes security a first order concern and not just a non-functional ones.

* Domain Specific Software Engineering: I'm trained as an industrial designer where the notion of common modular components with standard interfaces acting as a platform for product development is a known Good Thing in domains such as the automotive and consumer electronics industries. This chapter gives a good overview of modular design focusing on the software product lines approach. The example given is from Philips, but it could as easily have been from Toyota.

* People, Roles and Teams: software architecture, like other architecture disciplines, has a strong social dimension. This chapter explains how the architect role fits into an organisation and where they can add value and exert influence.

A Refreshing and Enjoyable Read

The is the book is by far the most textbookiest (new word?) books I have bought on Software Architecture. That is a good thing. It means that Software Architecture is becoming main stream enough that it is now offered as a college course topic along with other software engineering topics. Enough so that books are being written in a format intended solely for that purpose.

This book does a great job of covering a wide range of topics. It goes deep enough into each one of them to give the reader a great foundational understanding.

At first I was a little leery of their use of the ArchStudio tool suite, but the further I got in the book and the more I used the tool I could see the value it has in the architecture process. The tool really brings to light the connections between system components and forces a component based design. One of my favorite chapters is the Connectors chapter. The way they visually present their variation dimensions is really cool.

I don't know quite how to explain it, but the book has a unique presentation that I haven't seen in other architecture books. I am not referring to how the material is arranged. I am referring to the material presented. I like it. It seems to bring to light all the topics in software architecture that are important, but they are explained in a unique enough way that it doesn't feel like your learning the same thing you learned in the last software architecture book.

I read every book that comes out on the topic of software architecture for two reasons. The hope of learning something new, and to remind myself of all the things I have to keep in the forefront of my thinking, kind of a mental exercise. This book makes it easy to get my mental exercise. The authors have a good writing style that makes the material easy to get through.

The only downside to this book is that you have to be a teacher to get access to the additional material the authors offer. It would be nice if they allowed anyone who has purchased the book access.

I recommend this book for the beginner, as well as the experienced, software architect. It is a must read.

Modern intro to Software Architecture

I bought this book from Amazon late 2009, it has not left my side since. This book provides a modern introduction to the field of software architecture, for both students and seasoned professionals. Certainly a must if you are working in this field or aspiring to.
