Great sequel!

"The Coveted" by Laura Thalassa is book two of the Unearthly series and picks up about one month after book one left off. Gabrielle is now working for the Politia and hasn't spoken to Andre since the night his mansion burned. After a witch is killed and drained of her blood, all fingers are pointing to the vampires. It's up to Gabrielle to put her problems aside and work with Andre to solve the case before more people die and the truce between vampires and the supernatural community dissolves.

"The dead were not so scary. The living were the ones you had to watch out for." -Gabrielle

Again I love these characters. Gabrielle is really starting to rely on her instincts and learn to use her gifts as a vampire and siren in this installment. Not only that but she confronts her own demons and faces Andre. Oh Andre, how I love thee!!! This character makes a great protagonist and antagonist all at the same time. Inherently he is evil, he's a vampire. However now that he has met his soulmate, he is starting to have human feelings again and it makes him very adorable! The man in the suit is back and haunting Gabrielle even more, again he is a perfect villain. Super creepy and gives me goosebumps! Leanne, Oliver, and Caleb are also back and I love the humor and irony they bring to the main character's life. It gives the book a good balance.

"There were so many more things I'd rather be doing than this, such as getting my wisdom teeth pulled without local anesthetic, streaking through Peel Castle during a school day, going in for a pelvic examination with a male doctor. Yeah, I was that uninterested in this demonstration." -Gabrielle

The twists and turns in this book left me reeling! I loved the whole murder mystery tied into the All Hallows Eve festival. It made for a page-turning read. Also there was no way I could've predicted this ending. I was left hopelessly clueless until the last page and begging for more! I really can't wait to see just where the author takes this series. It's definitely going to be good!

Surprisingly Engaging

Now, for the good stuff.

I haven't read the first one. Haven't even LOOKED at the first one. But after reading this, I want to. It's next on my "to buy" list.

When the "vampire" aspect was brought in, I admit I rolled my eyes - I'm not a big vampire book fan. However, Laura Thalassa definitely put a spin on the whole world that made it an enjoyable read. Seers and Witches and Fairies and... shifters? Point being, it included different types of "supernaturals" or "mythologicals" than just the requisite vampires and shifters and other "baddies" you often find. I mean hey, if you're going to go creative on one aspect of the supernatural, why not just assume they all exist as well and have as much fun as possible?

Now, while it's apparent that the heroine could be considered a young adult, this doesn't necessarily read like a YA novel, which was a VERY pleasant surprise. I find her closest friends to be a good balance for her and actually bring something to the story.

There's not a lot I can criticize about this book. I wasn't hopeful at first, but as I read I found myself engaged and unwilling to put the book down. I was worried about the relationship between Gab and Andre, but was pleasantly surprised with their interaction. For the situations they were in, the situation I picked up on them leaving just a few months ago, and for Gab's headspace, it had just the right amount of tension without going overboard and shattering that element.

I am interested in following this story futher. I want to know why the Devil is after her - and I definitely want to know about this whole "vampire/siren" thing. And what's up with the fates involvement? There are questions left unanswered that intrigue me, and I definitely want to find out more.

This final book introduced a very unique aspect to the continuing story; the long lost love.

Serena and hot-ghost Jesse share a very intimate history that didn't end on the most amicable of terms. She harbors some guilt over this, and not having resolved their issues before Jesse went off to war and was killed. They reunite at the haunted Bed & Breakfast, but can they settle their unfinished business and get the closure they need?

Jesse seems to have more tricks up his sleeve and Serena ends up acting in a way that she ordinarily wouldn't...but it turns out to be the best thing she ever did!

The Most Touching Story Ever

By far, this is the book I most enjoyed reading (actually I finished it in 2 days!). It is extremely touching and gives you a sense of warmth. The story of John Merrick made me realise how people should appreciate and make the most of what they have. I felt I was very much involved in the story and each chapter made me eager to read the next one. I look forward to read more books on John's life.

Fictionalized, but still good

I read this after I saw the movie, and I couldn't put it down. I agree that the author can draw readers in, keeping them hooked.
However, this is based on the movie, which is fictionalized. John's real name is Joseph, and he did know his family. His deformities didn't start until he was about five, and they just got worse as he grew. In the book and movie, he quotes the Bible. His mother was a Sunday school teacher, but she died when he was ten or eleven. His father remarried, he was unwanted by his stepmother.
He did spend time in the workhouse, but he got himself out. Signing on to a freakshow was the only way he could earn a living, his appearance was that horrible. Joseph was treated kindly by his employer, until he was bought by someone else. They toured Belgium, like in the book/movie. He made his way back to England alone. There, he finally met Dr. Treves, who took him in.
This book and movie rearranged the order of things. It works for suspense reasons, making you wonder whether John would survive. The book also mentions a vicar teaching him to read, and elaborates on his time spent in the workhouse, making it longer than it really was. The evening at the theatre was done incognito, without the speech from Mrs. Kendal at the end of the performance.
The ending is accurate, he did die lying down, very sad. At least, Dr. Treves was kind to him, and saw the man behind the disability.
For the real story, I'd recommend The True History of the Elephant Man by Peter Ford.

Not meaning to detract from movie, but as for the book...

It's been about 20 years since I read the book, but as I recall it attempts to flesh out a movie whose creators had already gone to some lengths themselves to embellish upon what's known about the last years of the life of Mr. Merrick.
Since only a few primary sources, and brief ones at that, are available on the subject, a good deal of embellishment would have been needed to create the movie. A certain degree of sensationalization (is that a word?) is probably unavoidable as well, in order to sell the movie to a larger audience. This is apparent in the way that Merrick's appearance is only gradually revealed, and then only after the suspense has been suitably built up by the depiction of various reactions of horror and/or sadness. Additional scenes were invented as well, to help transport the viewer into the world of late 19th century London and the hospital setting where most of the movie transpires.
I don't think that kind of fictionalization was wrong on the part of Lynch and the others who made the film. In fact, I'm both a big fan of the movie and an avid reader of nonfictional material on Merrick.
But the book, as I recall so many years later, carries the embellishments a bit too far. The male hospital worker who in the movie parades his compatriots through Merrick's quarters, is here shown sexually abusing some female hospital patients as well. It also failed to strike me as more than an average-quality novelization of a wonderfully made film which deserved better.
My critique is necessarily weakened by the lack of other details in my memory of the book. And I suppose that, to the extent the book interests more people in learning about the real Merrick, or even just in watching the movie, its writer achieved something positive.
As a real memorial to Merrick I find the book sadly lacking. Better to turn to Dr. Treves's "The Elephant Man" or Ashley Montagu's similarly titled book. (I refrain from comment on Howell and Ford's "True History of the Elephant Man," though I own a copy, as it fails to document its sources.)

great adventure for young readers

This book is a great read for lovers of fantasy. The author has created a realm where any historical character can exist along side magical creatures and where ordinary young people can become heroes. It's a great coming of age story full of action and adventure and even touches of romance that will engage young readers from about age 12 to adult. Well done Mr. Goslin.

Who said studying can't be fun?

The reason I bought this book is really for my husband. He was "distracted" in high school. We've been doing very good without his H.S. diploma but I wanted him to at least take the GED. I picked this one, first, beacause of it's title. It wasn't so "formal" like the other ones. This actually sounded pretty "casual." Secondly, because of the Princeton GED tests they have in the back. That really helped us a lot (I'm his "tutor":)). Lastly, and the best reason to buy this book is that it's funny. What I mean by that is that they don't try to bore the life out of you. They teach you really helpful things but they word it in ways that the subject keeps your attention. My husband was never the "school" type but amazingly he reads Craking the GED voluntarily and he TESTS himself!!!I even catch him smiling to himself while studying sometimes! In conclusion, if you want to get the GED over with but don't want to hire someone to hold your eyes open...Buy the book.It's GREAT! It's PERFECT for teenagers also.

Great study aid!

I really liked this book. The writers wrote in a way that was interesting and easy to understand. They were able to catch and keep my attention which was surpising, but I also agreed with the other reviewer when he/she said that there should have been more detailed explanations. For example, in the math section there are a lot helpful practice problems which I liked, except when I turned to the back of the book to check my answers and I got one or two incorrect, it told me the right answer, but didn't really explain why that was the right answer. So, since I had no idea how they got that answer I had no idea how to fix the mistake I made doing the problem. Still, besides that one drawback, in my opinion the book was great. It was very thorough, comprehendable and written in a laid back manner. I passed the GED simply from studying this book alone. I reccomend this book to anyone reading this review.

Before I applied to do my GED I came to this site and read about all the study guides available . This book definately got the best reviews .I went to the libarary and found only the Arco test books which were ok but when I bought this book it just made everything easier and less complicated.It explained things in great detail and best of all it told you the things that are most likely to come up in the test.When I went to do my exams I found the book very acurate in its predictions. I am glad to say that I passed with pretty good scores .So to all those who come after me good luck and get the book it is definately worth it.
