About the Author
John T. Warren (Late) was professor of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His major research and teaching centered in Communication Pedagogy, Performance Studies, and Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies. He was the author of numerous books including Performing Purity: Whiteness, Pedagogy and the Reconstitution of Power; Casting Gender: Women and Performance in Intercultural Contexts; Critical Communication Pedagogy; and the SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction. He also authored articles for several education and communication studies journals, including Educational Theory, Communication Education, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

Deanna L. Fassett is Department Chair and professor of communication pedagogy at San José State University where she has, since 2002, mentored her department’s graduate student instructors.  She is the author and editor of three other books:  Coordinating the Communication Course:  A Guidebook, Critical Communication Pedagogy, The SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction, and Communication: A Critical/Cultural Introduction, Second Edition. Her published research has appeared in a broad array of communication studies journals, including Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

this textbook was better than others

As a student, this textbook was better than others. It worded certain things differently than a normal one would. It put it in simpler language. The simple language allowed me to understand the terms a little bit better. The book and my professor combined made me switch my major, so that I could study communication. I loved how cheap it was too. Most textbooks are at least double this price which becomes extremely expensive.

Only if you need it

I only bought this because it was required for my class. This book trys to read easier than a normal textbook, but does the exact oppisite. The author was very biased, and it shows when you read it. Also, there are definitions and examples in this that conflict with other classes that focus on a more in depth study of the given topic.My opinon is, if you need it for class, buy or rent it whatever is cheaper, if not, don't waste your money, there are better communication books out there.

Terrible read, the writers are horribly biased

Obligated to get this book for a communications class. Terrible read, the writers are horribly biased, the format is chunked together making it difficult to grasp important information, and the definitions for the vocabulary are practically non-existent. Originally purchased the 1st Edition to this book only to realize that is completely different then this 2nd Edition forcing me to purchase this one.

excellent book

I have just got the book and I haven't read it yet, but I was thrilled and excited to see so many illustrations of theatrical buildings from ancient times until today which I haven't seen in any other book. I always prefer illustrations and photos over text and theory. I am a set designer and teach set design in university and I am shore this book will be extremely useful to me.

This is a remarkable book, with wonderful drawings and illustrations of theaters from the early days to the present. Very fine material on 18th century theaters and also comprehensive on developments in the 19th century. A must have book.

This volume covers a large swath of history neatly and as concisely and can be expected. It's seriously written, but conversational and engaging. It's beneficial to readers of many levels of experience from on overview to a review of chronologies and "players".

Great Short Treatment on the Early Church

Frend’s Early Church is a published version of a series of lectures he gave at Cambridge back in 1965. They set out to trace the developments of Christianity from the early church to the Council of Chalcedon and the pontificate of Pope Leo (around AD 450).

Frend is an eminent church historian, and this work is a great short read on the subject. It is more of a scholars work than a layman’s but it’s not so overly detailed that it becomes utterly boring. In fact, I greatly enjoyed it. I had read some of it in my schooling a couple of years ago, and finally got the chance to pick it up again and finish it from front to back. If you’re interested in a semi-detailed work on early church history, this would be a fine place to start.

I went thru the pages of the book and I give it a rate of 5 star. This book was highly recommended by my OB/GYN and Abdomen Instructor who said she always used it when she was a Tech., because it shows landmark/s to help you know that you are at the right image/structure. She was right. The landmarks are very helpful and are side by side with the images. You don't have to flip pages to look for these landmarks. As far as I am concerned, this is a must have book for scanning especially for beginners like me.

One of the worst colloquial courses

While the Colloquial course enjoy a good reputation for its courses in European languages, its three Arabic courses have been a disgrace for some twenty years already - something even those responsible at Routledge (the publisher) have admitted in private.

The main problem with this course is exactly the same as in the older Colloquial Arabic courses, far too little content. Compared to most other courses, this book is very thin despite Arabic being notoriously difficult. This leads to two consequences:

a. the grammar descriptions are too short and more bewildering than helpful. Colloquial courses for almost all European languages include a complete overview of the main grammatical points (of course not always in great detail, but still). For a beginner coming to Arabic, this course is likely to scare him/her off, as it doesn't help one bit in understanding grammar but still includes just enough to make it seem hard.

b. the vocabulary is a joke. For most other Colloquial courses, the vocabulary you learn in the course is somewhere around 1400-1600 words. Many courses include over 2000 words (Colloquial Italian, Icelandic, Albanian, Czech, Russian, Spanish of Latin America and probably others as well). This course, in sharp contrast, doesn't even include 600 words, and that's far too little for a course calling itself a "complete" language course.

So only one third of the vocabulary found in other Colloquial courses and hardly any help at all with the grammar. Despite having three Arabic courses on the market, Routledge still hasn't tried to produce a course that would fulfill the promises given by its other courses and by the "complete course"-label.

This is a pretty limited course in a lot of different respects. It doesn't treat grammar as thoroughly as it should and the amount of vocabulary it offers won't get a learner past the very beginning level. There is a little bit of material on the Arabic alphabet, but the very short dialogues are all written in a confusing system of transliteration, even though probably the majority of English-speaking students of spoken Arabic have already studied Standard Arabic for a while and of course know the alphabet. So there isn't really a whole lot here, although if you buy the accompanying CDs they will give you a good idea of how to pronounce words. Check out the American University in Cairo Press for some much more comprehensive courses (although be forewarned that the 'Kallimni 'Arabi' series by Samia Louis is almost entirely written in Arabic and would be very hard to do without a teacher.

The colloquial series in general is FANTASTIC. However, the arabic series (for all dialects) are too short, miss the mark on the standard of excellence I expect from the series, and needs a huge overall. It will work fine for you if you want to get enough language to travel but not for the even semi-serious language learner.

A pair of English adventurers, Anthony and Robert Sherley, spent years attempting to establish these ties, not always scrupulously, and their story was well known to England s greatest dramatist. To illuminate the creative uses Shakespeare made of the East, this book first looks at the life of the playwright himself, then at the dynasties that did so much to shape England and Persia in that tumultuous age. Other sections in the book profile key figures in the efforts to forge a connection between the two lands, with particular focus on the colorful Sherleys and their fatally ambitious sponsor, the Earl of Essex a great admirer of Shakespeare. The final section of the book briefly describes the plays and cites their many allusions to the East testimony that this literary giant was very much a man of his time.

Cyrus Ghani is a lawyer and scholar specializing in Iranian studies. He is the author of Iran and the Rise of Reza Shah; Iran and the West: A Critical Bibliography, and My Favorite Films. He was born in Iran and has lived in Tehran, Los Angeles, London, and New York City.

This was a good book to read, and hard to believe to interrelate Persia to England because Shakesper was not a scholar and coming to a point that someone like him to be connected to Iran is hard to believe.
