Lockheed's Advanced Development Project has set standards for the aerospace industry for half a century. Under its presiding genius, Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, the Skunk Works produced America's first jet fighter, the world's most successful spy plane (U-2), the first three-times-the-speed-of-sound surveillance aircraft and the F-117A stealth fighter. Rich was Johnson's right-hand man and succeeded him as director in 1975, retiring in 1990. In an entertaining style, the authors describe Johnson's tyrannical managerial style, his thorny but productive relationship with the Air Force and the stealth-technology breakthrough that revolutionized military aviation. Writing with freelancer Jonas, Rich also recounts Skunk Works' failures, including experiments with liquid hydrogen as a propellant and spy-drone flights over China's remote nuclear test facilities. He has much to say about the Defense Department bureaucracy and warns, "Everyone in the defense industry knows that bureaucratic regulations, controls, and paperwork are at critical mass... and... in danger of destroying the entire system." Since its inception in 1943, the Skunk Works has been one of the most top-secret military contractors. Now that the Cold War has ended, its story is uncloaked by former chief Rich, now retired. Using a small number of expert employees, the Skunk Works built technologically advanced aircraft that were disavowed by the government and its users, the Air Force and the CIA, for years after the aircraft were operational. The Skunk Works built notable planes such as the P-80 (the first operational jet fighter), U-2 (the high-altitude spy plane), and F-117A (the Stealth fighter). The story of Stealth's development is most interesting not only in the design, building, and testing but also in its origina in a Russian scientist's paper on aeronautics. There are first-person accounts of some of the missions flown by pilots and notes from many government officials. Highly recommended.

A gem on many levels

This book is a gem on many levels:

1) On the history and development of spy planes: This has been covered by many previous reviews on this book. So, I won't write more here.

2) On creativity: There are a lot of books on creativity. Many of them are trivial. Most are written by people who themselves have not design or deliver noteworthy innovations that are of national or international significance. This book is different. It is written by a person who has contributed innovations at, and even run Skunk Works, which has delivered innovation after innovation that are internationally significant.

How does a smart scientist or engineer determine if an organization is a place of major technical inventions? This book tells you the characteristics of such organizations. How do you organize and run a place that can deliver breakthrough innovations at bargain prices? This book gives you the principles on how to do it correctly.

3) On cold war and patriotism: This book gives you a glimpse into the cold war, and the hair-triggering tension of nuclear war between U.S. and the ex-Soviet Union. Also, it shows the patriotism among the U.S. government officials, top military echelons, pilots, and civilian scientists and engineers. Even more, it shows how Skunk Works' technologies tipped the power towards the U.S.

4) On biographies: This book is a partial and vivid biography of both Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich. Their personal traits, both strengths and flaws, are clearly described.

5) On Navy's major shortcomings: Kelly's fifteenth principle of rather to starve than to deal with the Navy is nothing short of astonishment. The descriptions of the Navy's sticking to Aegis frigate rather than Skunk Works' SWATH ship, and preferring traditional submarines rather than stealth submarines are so, so astounding. Right now, U.S. has the world's greatest naval power. U.S. naval power could have been much, much greater and the cost to the tax payers could have been much, much lower cost if the Navy had adopted stealth technologies from Skunk Works.

6) On the harmful effects of government interferences, wastes and bureaucratic madness: Reading this book and you can understand why we spend so much in defense and get so little in return.

Overall, this book deserves more than 5 stars. It should be read by CEOs and CTOs (Chief Technology Officer) of every major and high tech corporation looking for ways to leapfrog the competitions. It should be read by every Secretary of Defense and officers in high military echelons looking for military technologies to surpass other nations. It should be read by every bright scientists and engineers looking for a place to work where major innovations can be produced. It should be read by every science and engineering professors on how to educate future generations of science and engineering students that can create and innovate.

Awesome aerospace/military history

Skunk works is the true story behind the coolest, high tech, top secret, aerospace engineering division operated by the Lockheed Martin corporation. Forged by legendary U. Michigan alumnus Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Works has created the coolest planes of recent memory, including the SR-71 Blackbird (currently visible on the flight deck of the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in NYC), the F117A Stealth Fighter, and the U2 spy plane. The F22 Raptor and the Joint Strike Fighter are also creations of the Skunk Works, but are not covered in this autobiography written by the successor to Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich.
This quick read is well worth your while for a couple of reasons. First, the stories behind the creation of these planes is very interesting. For example, the Skunk Works engineers found the mathematical key to the stealth design buried within an obscure physics journal originally published in Russian. Oddly, the Russians military never capitalized on the principle, despite urgings from the article's Russian author. Furthermore, when the stealth plane was first designed and kept in a secret hanger infested with some bats, the bats couldn't detect the plane with their "sonar-like" sense, and they ended up crashing into it.
The book also makes for excellent military and therefore world history. Accomplishments of the U2 spy plane and the F117-A Stealth Fighter are covered in depth and literally changed the course of world events during the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other skirmishes. Many interesting, behind the scenes (formerly classified?) missions are also revealed in this book. Ben Rich also speculates on the future types of planes currently on the minds of engineers at the Skunk Works, and the implications will change how wars are fought in the future.
For readers who liked this book, NOVA recently published a video on the creation of the Joint Strike Fighter, a contract fought over between the Skunk Works and the Phantom Works of Boeing. These do all fighters are amazing, and this video is definately worth watching for those who enjoyed "Skunk Works."

Engrossing true story

I'm not particularly an avid reader of military history books or contemporary history books in general, but after a coworker described this book, curiosity got the better of me and I bought it. I'm glad I did.
Ben R. Rich joined the legendary 'Skunk Works' as a young engineer, worked on some of the most secretive military projects in recent history, and later ended up taking over management of Skunk Works. As a result, perhaps no one else in the world has as much first hand knowledge of these projects, and no one else is better positioned to chronicle some of America's military crown jewels.
Rich (and Janos) have crafted a unique book that gives Ben Rich story, with interesting first hand accounts from pilots, air force personnel, and highly placed government officials. Rich covers the struggles encountered while building various classified aircraft: the U2, SR-71 BlackBird, the stealth fighter, the stealth boat, among others. He also lightly delves into the darker side of the defense industry: politics, waste, and bureaucracy.
An amazing read, and highly recommended.

Even on the Kindle some of the diagrams were hard to read. Was disappointed to find a number of clock mechanisms and even something as simple as a chain and sprocket included, but overall it was great inspiration!

About the Author

Jacqui Greene Haas has been the athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Ballet since 1989, is the director of dance medicine academic seminars (www.dancemedicine.net), and is the director of the dance medicine division of Wellington Orthopedics in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she treats dancers in physical therapy, postsurgical rehabilitation, and general conditioning. 

 

A former professional ballet dancer with Boston Ballet, Southern Ballet Theatre, Tampa Ballet, New Orleans Ballet, and Cincinnati Ballet, Jacqui holds a BA in dance from the University of South Florida and an athletic training certificate from the University of Cincinnati. She also has a certificate in Pilates instruction from St. Francis Memorial Hospital dance division in San Francisco and a certificate in Pilates rehabilitation from Polestar Education in Miami, Florida. She has developed injury-prevention programs for numerous dance studios as well as the McGing Irish Dancers, the School for Creative and Performing Arts, and the University of Cincinnati dance department. 

 

Jacqui is a frequent presenter, speaking to dancers, instructors, and health care practitioners, including presentations at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association conferences. She has been published in Dance magazine and Advance Rehabilitation magazine.

Every dancer should own this book

I bought this book upon peeking into Yoga Anatomy at the Nature and Science Museum. Looking to save money and buying it used, to save a tree ;) this book popped up on my reccommendations and as a dancer I thought: "hmmm... that looks useful". So I ordered it and when I received it I couldn't put it down.
The reason why this book is such a plus is due to the incredibly helpful illustrations that go with the great specified workout suggestions and inform you exactly about what muscle is being targeted. Also the "Dance Focus" next to every workout, showing and explaining in what area of dance or during what kind of move you would use that muscle.
The book is split into the sections of the body and each chapter begins with a wonderful Info on that area of the body, including Illustrations of sceletal structure and then the muscle layers atop that.
After I had the book for a few days I decided it wouldn't be a bad idea to actually know those bones and muscles by heart, so I stuck little pieces of blank paper over the words and started studying indead of just reading it all and it helped me immensely in the actual workouts.
My Arm, Adducter, Hamstring, Knee and Releve Strength has improved considerably since I've been working with this book.

A must have, if you want to improve specific aspects of your dancing!!!

Great anatomy overview for dance students

I've been taking an adult ballet class for about a year and a half with minimal no previous ballet experience and this book has been incredibly helpful in clearly presenting the muscle groups of the body and how the body works while dancing.

While none of the strengthening exercises or stretches are new to me (I've been an athlete a long time and practice yoga and Pilates regularly) it was nice to see how the exercises and stretches work each muscle group and what ballet movements those muscle groups are used for.

I have recommended this book to my fellow adult ballet classmates and they seem to be enjoying it as well.

Great purchase

Dancer on the side, can't always make it to class and travel a lot. This book is filled with tons of additional exercises one could do on top of/in between classes for the active dancer or while slowly working back into things for the former dancer. A lot of the dance moves suggest having some sort of bar, but one can easily substitute some other form of support (desk, table, etc). Broken up by body area, so if you have a trouble area you can focus on that or if you're looking for a whole body work out you can choose different exercises for all the different parts of the body. Very detailed, easy to read and follow along with, love the diagrams on the side of each exercise that show what moves/positions each exercise can help with.

Sweetness in finding the right one

I have read several books by Erika Reed overs the years and enjoy watching her grow as a writer. This new series is set against the backdrop of a Seattle night club. In addition to Gianna's friends, we also meet the owners and employees of the club. Enough insight is given to all of these characters to provide creative fodder for future books in the series. The first book in the series focuses on two of the four owners who are attracted to Gianna. Bryce and Dylan Nash are brothers who have known that they wanted to settle down with a woman they can sha re. When they meet Gianna, they set out to build a relationship with her as individuals and as a group. While they are both different personalities, Gianna is pulled towards both of them equally. Their patience allows her the chance to build confidence in their unique relationship, and that is what I loved the most about them. Their's is a story of the sweetness found in finding that right person. They never push her: they allow her to come to her own decisions. Gianna has always measured herself as less than her friends, but through their eyes, she blossoms into the beautiful woman she always has been capable. I'm interested to see where the next dance at Club Cravings takes us in book 2!

I loved this book cannot wait for the next in the series! This was the second book that I have read by this author and she really knows how to hook you in, I could not put it down. Bryce and Dylan definitely had me swooning. I liked how the relationship built and how we got to see how Gianna learn how to be in this type of a realtionship. I really hope the other characters get their owns stories because I fell in love with them.

The definitive collection of lives of early Carolingian rulers

Thomas Noble has gathered all of the essential contemporary or near contemporary Lives of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious into one slim volume. While the lives of Charlemagne by Einhard and Notker have been around for a long time in Penguin paperbacks, and Thegan's 'Life of Louis' recently became available in "Carolingian Civilization: A Reader" by Paul Edward Dutton, the new translations of the "Vita Hludovici" by the Astronomer, and "In Honour of Louis" by Ermoldus Nigellus, are are alone worth the price of the book.

Strongly recommended for those interested in early Carolingian history.

About the Author
Joshua Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789, he earned his Ph.D. at University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (2000).

Carol Symes is an Associate Professor of history and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the history department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she has won the top teaching award in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Her main areas of study include medieval Europe, especially France and England; cultural history; history of information media and communication technologies; history of theatre. Her first book was A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007).

The book pairs brief verbal explorations of emotions with evocative imagery, popping with bright colors against the effectively used white background. A different take on teaching emotions

Each page of this book talks about a different emotion and the cut out hearts grow smaller until the end of the book. A little girl describes how she feels with each emotion. On sad days her heart feels heavy like an elephant. On happy days her heart feels shiny and bright like a yellow star.

The illustrations are simple and colorful. The cut out hearts on each page add a fun element.

This story was originally written in French and translated into English. Although the examples are at times a bit abstract ("But other times my heart is cool. I bob along gently like a balloon on a string...This is when my heart is calm.") this is a wonderful way for children to understand emotions. The book is advertized for ages 2-4. I do not believe this young age will understand the full meaning of the examples. I think ages 4-7 would be a better audience. It would also be a great book to use for those on the autism spectrum who would benefit from the descriptive language. I would have liked to have seen a boy as well as a girl narrate the story, but oh well.

I’ve been in love with “In My Heart” since it arrived at my home some months ago. The words and illustrations are equally beautiful. They make feelings accessible. Children — and adults — know what it’s like to be happy, sad, brave angry or shy, but often can’t find the words to express how they are physically feeling inside. “In My Heart” provides the words. Fanciful illustrations and a die-cut heart that extends through each spread make this book irresistible. My daughter already loves the hearts and can spend upward of 10 minutes thumbing through the cardstock-weighted pages. It’s only a matter of time before she begins to understand the accompanying words — I can’t wait!

Beautiful and useful

My 2 year-old daughter loves this book. After we first got it it was her favorite, and she wanted to hear it many times every day. Now, we just read it occasionally. A few minutes ago she was feeling really mad, so I pulled it out and started reading, and she instantly calmed down. Other times without reading it I sometimes ask her, "what feelings are in your heart right now?" and that helps her sort it out better. Feelings can be a little hard for kids to identify and understand, but this expresses them in a new way. The pictures are modern, interesting, and engaging. The heart cut outs kind of add to it. Prior to this we used to read Walter Was Worried fairly often, and that is also a good one (very different from this). I will probably start including this with second or third birthday gifts for my friends' kids. It is really lovely, and it has enhanced our talks about feelings, and my daughter's ability to cope with strong feelings.

Good Book

This book is easy to read for a science text and has pretty good descriptions and pictures. I'm using it for an Intro to MicroBio class and it suits me well. I was a little shocked that it did not come with a CD or an online website supplement, but I guess that helps keep costs down (A book like this for only $100 brand new is great).
