Knight, best known for his Vampire Earth mass market series (Tale of the Thunderbolt, etc.), makes an auspicious trade paper debut with this smoothly written fantasy told from the point-of-view of its dragon hero. Four dragon hatchlings, flameless and dependent on their father to bring home horses and even men as food, face a host of dangers, including fierce dwarves who invade their cave. Only Auron, the pride of the litter, will survive to fight those determined to drive his breed to extinction. Some flat poetry that poses no threat to Tolkien only slightly slows the brisk pace of this bloody, unsentimental fairy tale. (Dec.)

Watership Down, Duncton Wood, Redwall and Now . . .

E. E. Knight's Dragon Champion continues the popular tradition of animal perspective fantasy, but instead of rabbits, moles, or other woodland creatures as the protagonists, he carries it a step further with an animal which itself is a fantasy - dragons. It's a very clever concept, and like Knight's Vampire Earth series, he executes the basic concept with wit, excitement and flair.

Told from the viewpoint of Auron (later AuRon, when his wings develop and he can fly), it's a tale of a dying breed among men, Elves and Dwarves, and one dragon's quest to learn his place in the world and how he might change it.

This is not a fairy tale, for there is plenty of graphic violence, and the novel opens with a rather savage birth ritual involving survival of the fittest from a clutch of hatching dragon eggs. Knight blends his story with fascinating dragon lore, and manages to cover nearly everything you've ever heard regarding dragons, keeping the legends plausible, while maintaining his narrative pace and picaresque plot.

Knight does not make the mistake, as so often occurs in this sub-genre of fantasy, of making every human character evil. There are good and bad men, and there are good and bad dragons.

This novel is complete in itself, but my understanding is that Knight plans to continue the series with novels told from the perspectives of AuRon's surviving sister and brother, and then a grand finale fourth volume tying all three together.

Get in on the beginning, readers. It's going to be something special.

I dare you!

I'm not big into epic fantasy, though I loved Robin Hobb's Mad Ship trilogy and a few others. I picked up Dragon Champion because I had seen it several times on my way to another shelf to pick up my usual fare of dark/urban fantasies and paranormal thrillers. I opened it, planning to satisfy my curiosity and put it back, but it was not to be.

This dragon snatched me into his world so easily I didn't realize it had happened till two hours later when I came to myself, sitting on the floor under the shelf from which I'd taken the book. Dragon Champion is a fierce, haunting tale of terrible loss, self-sacrifice and heroism. The end gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. There is so much I love about this book I dare not share it here and spoil your enjoyment. So, go pick it up...I dare you to read the first few pages and put it back on the shelf.....I dare you!

Wonderful beginning to a set

If you wander by a set of books, simply the front cover will draw you to this book. Upon seeing the front cover, I immediately read the back cover. Auron is born with natural skill and cunning, enabling him to survive. He is the rare scaleless gray dragon, which means that he doesn't have an insatiable hunger for gold and gems like other dragons. His remaining brother that is allowed to live betrays his family and Auron's mother and sister are immediately killed. He hides with his sister until his father comes back and they are spotted, and their father finds out what has happened and is attacked. Auron and his sister must split ways, in hopes that one will find their father and the other will draw away the attackers. Auron then begins his journey alone into becoming a Drake. This is a wonderful book, and anyone a fan of science fiction and fantasy will love this book!!

It's OK Depending on who is using it

If you are a 2D fighting fanatic, you are not going to benefit much from this book. However! It's not so bad if you are relatively new to 2D fighters. I think a newbie would benefit from this. It's not too in depth for a seasoned fighter, but for a newbie it's a valuable resource in the right hands.

Considering I have played 1000s of hours of fighting games, not that I am very good, I still learned some concepts from this book, and even some strategy.

I think the guys who have been playing 2d fighters since the late 80s religiously will not find this useful.

Structure-wise it goes into every move, and then some basic strategy. Nothing too advanced, but still a good place to start.

Well put together overall.

Quality Work

I just picked up KoF 12 and the strategy guide from a friend. I don't know if I'm really liking the game, but this guide is amazing. It covers all of the characters in great detail and gives me all of the basics I need to learn the game properly. I've never played a KoF game before, but I like all fighting games, so this guide was really helpful to give me insight into the game and the characters.

A definite read for anybody interested in bettering themselves

An incredibly useful book that I am certain will help anybody make positive changes in their lives. If you read this and don't find yourself thinking about things differently and making positive changes... You must have missed some pages.
What I love is that the authors are talking from an incredibly vast life experience, an experience that shines through in each page of the book.

Really good advice in here

excellent points and suggestions made in this book, especially the chapter on communication. Only caveat I'd make is the opening chapters advice only holds good for people who have a certain type of relationship, in some relationships independence is not the goal.However the title makes it clear it's for people who want this type of relationship and as such is very good advice.

Great book for anyone entering into a new relationship or who might have lost touch with their personal interests & needs within a long standing relationship. Good as a gift to brand new couples. Their relationships stand a better chance at long term success after reading this little gem. :)

I absolutely loved this series. Julia and Nolan love story was so sexy. Their connection was so loving and intense. The support they have for each other is so beautiful. Their story had me hooked from the beginning. I love Ella Cox and she continues to write amazing love stories.

Prof. Fubini is a master at compiling and assimilating information about music. He is an expert in various fields and historical periods, and his insight and clarity into the zeitgeist of each period, in this case the 18th. Century is brilliant. Highly recommended.

Fun read about Christmas myths

It is so refreshing to read a book about an issue that has become controversial that is written with clarity and respect. Johnson has carefully researched seven attributes of the Christmas holiday and presents well-documented explanations of how those attributes began, how they grew, how they are often used to be divisive, and how people of all beliefs can enjoy the holiday with respect for the beliefs of others. Each chapter is organized by presenting the myth, exploring its origins and current manifestation, and explaining how it may have served to detract from enjoyment of the season. I especially like that the book does not denigrate or criticize anyone's choice of how to celebrate (or even decline to celebrate) the season but does offer reasoned arguments to encourage respect for diversity and avoidance of strident denunciations of how some may choose secular or religious observances. I do not agree with all his conclusions, but they are well reasoned, oppose dogmatism, and presented with tolerance for other viewpoints.

This book was fantastic! I was generally familiar with a lot of these myths, but the detailed backstories were fascinating. I would highly recommend this book to any skeptic or atheist, or even a Christian who's interested to know how their religion hijacked an ancient holiday. It's also ammunition for atheists who want justification for celebrating Christmas (or Krismas).

Enjoyable and interesting

An enjoyable read with quite a few interesting facts, and a perhaps a little bit too much speculation. The history around Christmas and its relationship to pre-Christian traditions is fascinating as well as the fact most Christmas traditions are less 150 years-old. There are several interesting historical facts in the book that I was unaware of, and the gentle but lightly sarcastic tone Johnson employs makes it highly enjoyable. I do think he may over-conclude in the "Santa Claus" origins section, but he does admit that this was actually the hardest to do research on as many misconceptions are reported as fact. A good read.

Which door represents your code? Which door represents your team or your company? Why are we in that room? Is this just a normal code review or have we found a stream of horrible problems shortly after going live? Are we debugging in a panic, poring over code that we thought worked? Are customers leaving in droves and managers breathing down our necks? How can we make sure we wind up behind the right door when the going gets tough? The answer is: craftsmanship.

There are two parts to learning craftsmanship: knowledge and work. You must gain the knowledge of principles, patterns, practices, and heuristics that a craftsman knows, and you must also grind that knowledge into your fingers, eyes, and gut by working hard and practicing.

I can teach you the physics of riding a bicycle. Indeed, the classical mathematics is relatively straightforward. Gravity, friction, angular momentum, center of mass, and so forth, can be demonstrated with less than a page full of equations. Given those formulae I could prove to you that bicycle riding is practical and give you all the knowledge you needed to make it work. And you'd still fall down the first time you climbed on that bike.

Coding is no different. We could write down all the "feel good" principles of clean code and then trust you to do the work (in other words, let you fall down when you get on the bike), but then what kind of teachers would that make us, and what kind of student would that make you?

No. That's not the way this book is going to work.

Learning to write clean code is hard work. It requires more than just the knowledge of principles and patterns. You must sweat over it. You must practice it yourself, and watch yourself fail. You must watch others practice it and fail. You must see them stumble and retrace their steps. You must see them agonize over decisions and see the price they pay for making those decisions the wrong way.

Be prepared to work hard while reading this book. This is not a "feel good" book that you can read on an airplane and finish before you land. This book will make you work, and work hard. What kind of work will you be doing? You'll be reading code--lots of code. And you will be challenged to think about what's right about that code and what's wrong with it. You'll be asked to follow along as we take modules apart and put them back together again. This will take time and effort; but we think it will be worth it.

We have divided this book into three parts. The first several chapters describe the principles, patterns, and practices of writing clean code. There is quite a bit of code in these chapters, and they will be challenging to read. They'll prepare you for the second section to come. If you put the book down after reading the first section, good luck to you!

The second part of the book is the harder work. It consists of several case studies of ever-increasing complexity. Each case study is an exercise in cleaning up some code--of transforming code that has some problems into code that has fewer problems. The detail in this section is intense. You will have to flip back and forth between the narrative and the code listings. You will have to analyze and understand the code we are working with and walk through our reasoning for making each change we make. Set aside some time because this should take you days.

The third part of this book is the payoff. It is a single chapter containing a list of heuristics and smells gathered while creating the case studies. As we walked through and cleaned up the code in the case studies, we documented every reason for our actions as a heuristic or smell. We tried to understand our own reactions to the code we were reading and changing, and worked hard to capture why we felt what we felt and did what we did. The result is a knowledge base that desribes the way we think when we write, read, and clean code.

This knowledge base is of limited value if you don't do the work of carefully reading through the case studies in the second part of this book. In those case studies we have carefully annotated each change we made with forward references to the heuristics. These forward references appear in square brackets like this: H22. This lets you see the context in which those heuristics were applied and written! It is not the heuristics themselves that are so valuable, it is the relationship between those heuristics and the discrete decisions we made while cleaning up the code in the case studies.

To further help you with those relationships, we have placed a cross-reference at the end of the book that shows the page number for every forward reference. You can use it to look up each place where a certain heuristic was applied.

If you read the first and third sections and skip over the case studies, then you will have read yet another "feel good" book about writing good software. But if you take the time to work through the case studies, following every tiny step, every minute decision--if you put yourself in our place, and force yourself to think along the same paths that we thought, then you will gain a much richer understanding of those principles, patterns, practices, and heuristics. They won't be "feel good" knowledge any more. They'll have been ground into your gut, fingers, and heart. They'll have become part of you in the same way that a bicycle becomes an extension of your will when you have mastered how to ride it.

Kindle version is fixed -- and its a great book too

In response to the "Don't get the Kindle version" review -- the problems appear to be resolved now. It looks fine on my Kindle 3 (aside from using proportional fonts in code examples, but this isn't too bad once you get used to it). Also, as many other reviewers have pointed out, this is an excellent book. I really wish all of my colleagues, predecessors, and managers had read it. My job would be so much easier and more enjoyable if they had.

Laughably poor print quality

As mentioned in other reviews, the book itself is low quality. The cover image is blurry, there is no print on the binding, and there are pointlessly large margins surrounding all of the text. On top of that, the printed font is grainy and difficult to read.

I would rather track down a proper printing of this product, than try to trudge through reading this. As a comparison, Code Complete is three times longer than this book. However, I was able to easily hold and read that book. This version of Clean Code feels like you are holding a ream of printer paper, with every page printed in portrait mode.

It is unwieldy to say the least.

Good content, poor print quality, with print covering less than half of each page.

Contents looks very good, but the quality of the print is poor. The cover looks like it was photocopied. The paper size is 8.5 x 11, but the print inside the book is only 5" x 8". You can do the math: the print on each page (8 x 5 = 40 sq. in.) covers less than half (43%) the space of each page (8.5 x 11 = 93.5 sq. in.). I suspect it was made at some "print-on-demand" facility. Very disappointing.

Yolo is the long awaited fourth book in the Internet Girls series, this book is written as text messages, telling the story of best-friends Angela, Maddie and Zoe as they make their way through freshman year of college, all at separate schools.

Each character has their own set of problems, from being dumped, pledging/or not pledging to a sorority which also includes hazing, a roommate who happens to be a kleptomaniac, having no friends and having to pretend that you do so no one will worry and discovering that geeks make potentially good boyfriends if only one of the girls would give him a chance.

These books are very quick reads (I read all four in two days), they are short and easy to get through, especially if you're looking for a contemporary read that you can finish in one sitting.

This was interesting to me the way the story was told, having never read a book written entirely in text I found it an intriguing way of telling a story, and so appropriate for all the technology and social sites that are around these days.

Whether there will be another book or not, this was a good addition to the series and I will be sure to pick up the next book if another one eventuates.

I absolutely loved the Internet Girls series when I was younger, so I was super excited to see there was a new book coming out! Combine that with the fact that the protagonists are in college, and I knew I had to read this one. (Even if the title makes me cringe so hard. Had to read this one locked in my room so no one would judge me for reading a book called yolo.) And yolo (urgh) turned out to be just what I expected - no, it won't be the most meaningful book you'll read this year, but it is definitely entertaining.

I loved being reunited with these characters, whom I loved in the original series. Lauren Myracle always impressed me with her ability to create such dynamic characters with just the use of their IMs/texts, and she did it again in yolo. In a way, that was easier in yolo than in the previous books - in the first three books, the main characters see each other in real life and have lots of interactions that we don't get to see, but since they're all at different colleges in yolo, it seemed a lot more natural to get to see most of their conversations.

It was great to see how their friendship developed once they all left for college. Even though I liked the individual characters, my favorite part of the series was always the strong friendship between the three of them. And luckily, they manage to continue such a strong friendship, despite the distance. I loved reading about the three of them in the new college setting, and getting to see how these new circumstances affected them. I just wish we had gotten some more exploration of Maddie's story towards the ending - I wanted to know more about what had really been going on.

The last sentence of the jacket copy description goes "Using of-the-moment technology, Lauren Myracle brings her groundbreaking series into the brave new virtual world of texting and tweets," and I found that aspect to be a little overdone. I was excited to see them text instead of just IMing (because really, who still IMs nowadays?), but the other references kind of bothered me. There are a couple of references to Snapchat and Twitter that just seem kind of forced: I didn't think they were necessary for the story, and these kinds of references just mean that the book will be outdated again relatively soon. Then again, I guess that's inevitable with this type of format.

There is one scene in the novel that my feminist heart can't help but comment on. This happens sort of late in the novel, but I wouldn't really consider this a spoiler because it doesn't tell you anything about the main story. Anyways, at a frat party, Angela and her friend Reid see these three guys taking advantage of a girl who has passed out (just from drinking, or because someone slipped her something, we don't know). Angela and Reid tell the guys to eff off, and they take the girl to her sorority house, leaving her a note explaining what happened. For the most part, this event is handled pretty well - I applaud Angela and Reid for stepping in, and for not going public with this without the girl's permission, and for lamenting the fact that so often, the perpetrators in these kinds of situations aren't punished. But I still had some issues with their discussion of rape and sexual assault. Angela wanted to tell the girl not to get that drunk again, which is victim-blaming bulls***, and Maddie told Angela not to get herself into a situation like that, which is, you guessed it, more victim-blaming bulls***. Rape is not caused by getting too drunk or not being careful. Rape is caused by rapists. Also, they talk about rape as if it were such an unusual, rare event - Zoe, for example, believes that something like that wouldn't happen at her school. Sorry, I don't believe that there is a single coed campus in the US where no one has ever been raped, and thinking that the people at your school wouldn't do something like that is simply naive - rape culture is everywhere. Yeah, so... mixed feelings about that scene, but it was a good try, at least.

Really, the only thing that matters is that yolo was a really fun read. You don't necessarily have to have read the previous books to understand this one, but my favorite part was reuniting with these characters I loved, so I do think reading the books in order adds a lot. If you liked the original Internet Girls series and are looking for a quick, fun read, you should definitely give yolo a try!

“we’re glad you’re okay

The Basics:

Maddie, Angela and Zoe have moved on to college and their first year apart. Their friendship continues through the IMs and texts we’ve been privy to through their high school years, as they face and share their new challenges as adults.

The Downside:

The attitude of our beloved Internet Girls when they discuss the now-infamous date rape scene comes across as more or less, “we’re glad you’re okay, and we’re not going to say it was your fault… but we’re totally thinking it.” Because of Myracle’s stellar track record for frank and sensitive handling of female sexuality, I was a little disappointed. Though, for the same reason, it’s easier to overlook that moment in favor of the many better-handled parts than it might otherwise be. I’m also compelled to call out yet another instance of the pop-culture convention which drifts ever further away from reality, by which all normal people of any intelligence at all are entitled to go live in student housing at four year universities straight out of high school no matter their families’ income or attitude toward their ambitions.

The Upside:

All problems aside, YOLO is a worthy continuation of the series. Fans will love the reunion with the trio and the chance to watch them grow up a little more. The magnificent balance between zany humor, serious content, and ultra-realist IM dialogue that always made the series special remains as magnificent as ever, and the format keeps it a lightning quick pageturner.
