This is a karate masterpiece!

This book can be a masterpiece of karate martial art.

There are three major differences this book from any other karate materials I have ever read.

First of all, this book is written in an English speaker friendly manner. If you open the pages, you will easily see that each Japanese terminology is written with plain English pronunciations. For example, page 9, the term "Age-uke" is pronounced as "ah"-gay"-"oo"- "kay." This pronunciation teaches English speaker how to say each Japanese terms accurately.

Secondly, a great numbers of pictures are used to demonstrate each karate technique in this book. They enable to clarify the detail of karate movement and technique with step-by-step method. I realized that some techniques are illustrated sequential manner; therefore, even senior citizen can learn each technique with their own comfortable learning pace.

Thirdly, this book is easy-to-follow for anyone: men, women, and children...whoever interested in learning or improving karate martial art abilities. This book teaches and illustrates "Traditional Japanese Karate," a young female introduces karate techniques. In spite of her youth and beauty, we can see her muscle strength, powerful movement, and steady posture. We can receive an impactive message from the author as "karate is for everyone" as his purpose of publishing this book.

Personally, I love reading this book because this book helps my 10 years old son who started karate a few years ago. It dramatically increased his karate vocabulary and he amazed the great number of defense and offense methods described in this book. Now he can do preview/review each technique before/after his karate lessons. I believe this book is also helpful for his belt test because it gains him the number of techniques, especially for ippon-kumite testing.

Going beyond age, gender, language, and nationality, anyone can learn karate for both mental and physical strength with this book. I highly recommend "Traditional Japanese Karate"! The book is easy to understand and follow and will improve your Karate abilities in a short time.

Learn Karate the Japanese way with this easy-to understand narrative with stellar illustrations! You can see and read what you need to do to develop your martial art skills at any level! As a mom of two GREEN belts from Sinsei Abe's dojo, I can attest to his thorough knowledge in the arena of Karate! You won't be disappointed with this book, it's the first I have seen with the English/Japanese terminology!

unfriendly formatting

I am disappointed with the formatting of this e-book. In digital view, the minimum useable screen will be your desktop. If you really WANT to take the book with you on your Kindle or i-pod, maybe this is a barely viewable/viable option.
My opinion: Buy the book and do not touch the digital version until this gets a really good overhaul.

An excellent text for a new-comer in telecommunications.

Fundamentals of Telecommunications was written for the layman just starting out in the field of telecommunications. The level of writing is comparatively low. The mathematical and electrical relationships are such that readers with nearly no math or science backgrounds should feel at home. For those who believe that they need a refresher in high school science will find a mini-refresher course in the appendices.
Fundamentals of Telecommunications starts with introductory concepts such as "connectivity," direct and tandem routes and topologies. The second chapter uses electrical telegraph to teach the reader how electrical signals convey intelligence. This introduces, in a very elementary fashion, digital transmission and what the bit is. As the reader proceeds, concepts are built upon and new ideas are introduced such as quality of service and signal impairments, thus to switching, traffic and transmission. Thence the books moves into voice telephony and how digital networks work, data communications and satellites.
I have brought to this book over 20 years of giving telecommunication seminars at the University of Wisconsin, George Washington University, Arizona State University and the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (in Spanish) among others. At one seminar, I was asked: "What's resistance?" A response to this question may be found in Appendix I.

Disappointing

My impression from reading this book is that it was written by an old analog telephone engineer. The book covers so many topics that are just not used any more, for example, frequency division multiplexing of analog voice channels. While some of this stuff is interesting from a historical point of view, it's really useless information for anyone who's interested in how the network works today.

Additionally, the book's primary focus is on voice: how it's transmitted, what the signaling is to set up and tear down calls, traffic engineering, design of local loops, etc.

It's also dated. He occasionally talks about a technology that's "coming" and that technology is already old technology in the network today. On page 219, he writes, "It should be noted that by the year 2000, we can expect to see several low earth-orbit (LEO) satellite systems in operation" so it's obvious that some of the material was written a LONG time ago and never updated.

Finally, the book has many editing errors, including errors in some of the equations. For example, on page 622 (top of the page) there's an equation which has an equal sign where it should be a plus sign. I tried to contact the author to see if there's an errata web page so that these editing errors could be corrected manually but haven't been able to contact him.

That's not to say that the book doesn't have value. There's some good information in the book if your primary interest is traditional voice telephony and you can plow through all the historical information. If your interest is more in data communications, and perhaps VOIP for voice, you might do better to seek out another book.

Do Not Miss Reading!

Whatever you do, do NOT miss reading a Bev Irwin book! I received Missing Clayton for my review. This is the 2nd book of Ms Irwin's I have read and I cannot wait to read another one! Missing Clayton kept me spellbound and I couldn't wait to find out what happened! After I finished I was sad that I didn't have more! This book, as with Ms Irwin's other books will keep you on your toes throughout the entire book! Her writing style pulls you into the book where you can feel this mother's pain and fear in searching for her son. I don't want to give a spoiler on this book, so Go, Get this book NOW and read it! While you are at it get another Bev Irwin book! This book along with her others are heading for best sellers! I can also see movies in the future! Keep up the wonderful reads, Bev!

Missing Clayton is about a child abduction and the related trauma.

I had a sort of love/hate relationship with this one as it was just too realistically horrible and painful experiencing so much through the mother's and the son's eyes. However, this does show how well written the book is.

Overall, it is a very vivid, fast past ride!

This is the first book written by Ms Irwin i have read. Bev Irwin has a knack for writing very realistically and emotionally from many points of view, even the protagonist. A story of loss and pain from the mothers perspective that grips you and leaves you praying for her and her sons safe return. I was riveted. I look forward to her next book.

Potluck is a reflections by a group of writers from diverse backgrounds. They came together as The Critique Group during Creative Writing courses conducted by Renu Balakrishnan at Xaviers Institute of Communications, Mumbai. The Critique Group met regularly through the years, over many dinners. The writers were encouraged by Renu to be different, to experiment with form and content, to give and receive criticism. The comments were gentle at first and as the group got closer, the critiques got harsher and the stories better. Every story stems from a deep personal experience. or from looking at life with sensitivity. Just like the group, there is no common thread that connects the stories. Each voice in Potluck is unique. Like a potluck dinner where many people bring in different food with different flavours, this book has different stories from different authors. Some of them are great, some mediocre and some one gets the feeling why was this published. Overall worth reading. Warning, some stories are really heart-rendering.

As an experimentalist, I had found it very frustrating having my analytical tools incompatible with my experiments. For example, it is experimentally impos­ sible to generate a step-function wave and yet that is the type of analytical solution available. Spectral analysis is very encompassing - it touches on analysis, numerical meth­ ods, and experimental methods. I wanted this book to do justice to its versatility, so many subjects are introduced. As a result some areas may seem a little thin and I regret this. But I do hope, nonetheless, that the bigger picture, the unity, comes across.
