I sure wish I had read the reviews for this...I could have printed coloring pages off the Internet that look better and saved some money! And to beat all, the pictures are blurry!!!! I don't often have a bad review for a product, but this one takes the cake!

When the Japanese bubble burst in 1991, so did the promise of a good life for those who followed the rules. Workers who had given their adult lives to Japanese companies felt justifiably betrayed. More importantly, young people lost faith in a system that had betrayed their fathers.

It was not long before the shock of this change moved from the news media to the popular media. Graphic novelists began producing works that parodied the old genres. There was a deadly samurai assassin with orange bouffant hair tied with a red ribbon, a pirate captain who couldn’t swim, and a “juvenile delinquent” ninja. Takeuchi Naoko's superheroine graphic novel, Sailor Moon, was one of the first of these subverted graphic novels (manga).

There are two chapters and an introduction in this book. The first chapter is background material analyzing various critical approaches to the female superhero. It begins with Wonder Woman but focuses primarily on Cutey Honey, a female superhero who shares many of the problematic aspects of her Western counterparts.

The second chapter is on Sailor Moon, the first postmodern and postbubble Japanese female superhero. Instead of a tomboy rivaling men in her athletic prowess, Takeuchi Naoko’s heroine is a “cry baby” obsessed with video games, shopping, and “cute” older boys. Sailor Moon also celebrates the intentionally camp. As retro-pastiche tour de force, the graphic novel walks a tightrope between homage to the superheroine and subversion of the genre’s varied tropes. Set against Art Deco backgrounds, Sailor Moon and her elegant tuxedo-clad boyfriend exchange dialog as sharp, if not quite as sophisticated, as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This chapter also looks at the same sex relationships in Sailor Moon, an aspect of the manga that has been somewhat controversial in the West. The relationships are placed into the context of the Japanese all female theater, the Takarazuka, and other models that Takeuchi used for her characters.

Jon LaCure teaches Japanese language and literature courses at the University of Tennessee. He regularly teaches an introductory course on the contemporary Japanese graphic novel and animation in translation. He has also taught courses on CLAMP, Takahashi Rumiko, Japanese cyberpunk, and postbubble Japanese horror films.

Reading Manga by Moonlight, Writing Criticism by Daylight...

This ebook took me completely by surprise. Sailor Moon and Postbubble Japan is the first part in a series contextualizing and analyzing popular manga in the early 90s, and I appreciate that LaCure begins with Sailor Moon since it was instrumental in popularizing Japanese comics in the U.S. Lately, anime and manga studies are picking up in academia, and I think it's strangely appropriate that LaCure's own book is split into multiple volumes, much like the tankobon format that has become a manga convention. The book is clearly written, more for a mainstream cultural studies audience rather than the lofty critical theory crowd, but you'll hear no complaints from me. I would feel just fine assigning this book to an undergraduate course as a supplement to Sailor Moon. It makes for a good read while running errands as well. I can't wait to get a chance to read the next volume, which discusses CLAMP. Highly recommended!

Several paragraphs and diagrams are ambiguous or confusing and can only be deciphered by consulting external sources, which makes this book very frustrating to read. The author strangely didn't choose to move basic material either entirely to the appendices or to cover it completely within the main chapters.

Previously a textbook rental volume. It's in excellent condition. A great value.

I'm coming mid-way into a music theory sequence, having just transferred universities. I was very pleased to find the book the class is using, the previous edition of a widely used music theory text. The volume was previously a textbook rental, at a very good price. I was a little concerned about the status of the book. However, the description was accurate. The pages are clean and the binding very sound. It's in essentially "new" condition. I'm very pleased.

Get the 3rd edition!

It's a nice book to learn music theory. Everything is very detailed in the book. We use this book as taxt book in Davis. Although this is a used one, it watchable and not bad at all. There is nothing major changes between the newest edition and this one, but this one is a lot cheaper. So get the third edition!

This book has helped me find a way to a cure for my cancer

I learned about Dean's book last year and was so inspired, as a Lymphoma patient whom is only 36 years old with 4 small children, I had very little hope left. After reading the book it gave me the courage and hope to try and alternative the traditional medical treatment I had been receiving over the last five years, that proved to be ineffective. Basically my doctors told me to that all they could do was PROLONG my life, however there was no CURE. Needless to say I was devastated, as my youngest baby is only two. I took the chance in seeting up an appointment with Dean Kraft, and have seen have every month for the last 7 months. My tumors are shrinking!!! My last Cat Scan looked great, and my doctors are baffeled!!!. I am currently under no other treatments, other than Dean's hands on healing. I take his book to bed with me every night and read a chapter as even though I have read it several times, it is my inspiration and continues to give me the hope and courage to fight this awful disease. Dean and Rochelle Kraft are true Angels from above, and I beleive anyone who suffers from a fatal disease MUST read this book, it will change the way you think about the power of beleiving, as it will also change your life. God Bless all, and Thank the dear Lord for Dean Kraft.

Possibilities for Humanity

All these reviews are curious. Most comment on Dean's healing practice, and not on the book. Why does amazon allow this?

The negative reviews mostly lambaste Dean for not helping them. But do such people have any idea of how overwhelming it must be to have thousands of people begging for help? I know a healer, and she has to work hard at not being totally drained by people and their needs. Jesus had the same problem. Dean may be gifted, but he's only human.

As for the outrage over what Dean charges (purportedly $750 a session), this is peanuts as compared to what a hospital stay might cost...or death. I'd gladly sell my house to be healed from a painful, debilitating illness. And in a day and age when TV stars and sports figures receive tens of millions, $750 seems even more like peanuts for the gift of healing.

For those who Dean couldn't help, (he admits to not being able to help heal everybody), I wonder how anger impedes such a process? Many of reviews are so filled with anger! I cannot imagine anything more destructive to health.

Reviewers denounce Dean for working only two weekends a month. If true, so what? Perhaps that's all he can do at this point in his life (his book repeatedly states how draining healing can be for the healer). After twenty-five-years of helping others, I suspect that Dean needs the down time. Better he be available four days than no days.

In the wonderful movie RESURRECTION (with Ellen Burstyn, 1980), Burstyn portrays a healer who flees from humanity in order to protect herself. She still does healings, but totally anonymously. People have no idea of who she is, or of her gifts. All they know is that they've been mysteriously healed. I can appreciate such a struggle, and wonder if Dean will grow to feel the same way.

Anyway, back to the book. I recommend it for several reasons, but perhaps most because I like the IDEA that hand-on-healing is possible. In a world increasing gone mad, this book offers wondrous possibilities for humanity.

Remarkable , a real genius. someone you want to meet

Dean Kraft is a one of a kind healer. He is truly gifted. This book is a must read for those who are unable to fathom the gift this healer has. His search for truth and his own unanswered questions about how his magnetic power in his hands and body came about is fasciating. Follow with him his road of discovery and doubts, but mainly follow his long ihistory of healing the unhealble. Dean Kraft does not use any religious schools to bring about his energy. It's based on touch, and touch alone. A Touch of Hope is exactly that, he brings hope to the hopeless and cures 80% of those he touches He welcomes scientific experiments and doubting Thomas's. The books screams out to you to want to meet him and talk to him, let alone send anyone you might know who is suffering to him for help. Never before have I read a more compelling and heartwarming account of love and giving by one human being. Mr. Kraft has spent more than half his life in the service of healing others, many times at risk to himself. Through reading his book, I had occasion to meet with Dean and Rochelle Kraft. They are devoted not only to one another but to healing and finding answers so that others might be able to heal. Mr. Kraft is sure that there are others out there who do have his ability and don't know it. Throuth this book, I've seen some of his patience, and saw firsthand their recovery. One an ALS patient that was given a death sentence upon diagnosis. My husband. We now know he will not die, of ALS. Even non belivers will walk away from his book, questioning their own disbelief.

That's great and all but now as a 40 Something mother ...

My entire life I've been told, I missed my calling as a comedian. That's great and all but now as a 40 Something mother of three, I don't see the bright lights of an open mic night becoming part of my future. How do I blend the truth and pain of being told you are incredibly funny with a strong desire to amp up my photography blogging? Enter this incredibly witty and extremely well-written book chock full of examples and practical ways of implementing the techniques in several different mediums.

Heck, I am not even finished with the book and felt compelled to leave a review. #HeadofTheClass

This book is amazing! I purchased it with the plan of starting ...

This book is amazing! I purchased it with the plan of starting to write some of my own bits. I wrote one or two but never pursued it much further because life got in the way. I will say, however, that it was still very much a worthwhile purchase if for no other reason than learning more about the mechanics of comedy has actually allowed me to appreciate just watching and listening to comedy even more!

After you get the basics, John Vorhaus helps you understand what makes it funny and what slows it down and shows you how to get the laugh instead of just head nods because they realize you are ironic. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to write humor on demand. Other books interview humorists and share tips for doing stand-up, while managing to never actually give you a single tool to write a joke. John immediately takes you by the hand and gets you writing jokes on any subject, in a variety of styles.

I would love to see John write a book focused on the Comic Strip and similar short form humor.
