About the Author
Laurie Allen is a West Texas playwright who was drawn to the theatre during her teen years at Snyder High School while performing plays under the legendary Jerry P. Worsham. As this influential director led his students to a record setting state championships in UIL one-act play competitions, he taught these small town students they could achieve any dream they longed for, whether it was in the theatre or beyond. So, after graduating, she decided to combine her love for the theatre and her passion to write, and try her hand at writing a play. Her first play, Gutter Girl, won the Indian River Players One-Act Play Competition. At that moment she was hooked, knowing she had found the place where she belonged.



Now, over twenty-five of her plays for adults and teens have been published by various publishers. Her plays for teens have enjoyed wide success across the United States with several of her high school competition pieces succeeding in the National Speech & Forensics Competitions.

About the Author
Dr. Billingsley is a finance professor at Virginia Tech University and is an award-winning teacher at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research, consulting, and teaching focus on equity valuation, risk management and derivatives-based strategies, and regulatory finance. In 2006 he published a financial analysis book with the Wharton School. In addition, his research has been published in refereed journals, including the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, the Journal of Financial Research, and the Journal of Futures Markets. As a consultant, Dr. Billingsley has served as an expert witness on equity valuation, capital cost estimation, and economic damages analysis. His consulting clients include BellSouth Telecommunications, the United States Telecommunications Association, LECG, Sprint and others. A CFA charter-holder, Dr. Billingsley has taught CFA examination review courses at multiple levels for the last 15 years throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. He is the author of Portfolio Management, Equity Investments and Alternative and Derivative Investments in Candidate Study Notes, Volumes 3 and 4.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. His articles have appeared in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF BANK RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, AAII JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, BELL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS, DAILY BOND BUYER, FINANCIAL PLANNER, and other publications. Dr. Joehnk served a six-year term as executive co-editor of the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH. He and his wife live in Flagstaff, Arizona, where they enjoy hiking and other activities in the nearby mountains and canyons.

In the second edition, the section on ecotoxicology and effects on pollutants has been expanded considerably, as has Chapter 4 on ecological principles and concepts. Further improvement has been made by the addition of a section on ecological engineering - the application of ecologically sound technology in ecosystems - and an appendix on environmental examination of chemicals. The problems of agricultural waste have been included in Part B, and in Chapter 6 on waste water treatment, several pages have been added about non-point sources and the application of ``soft'' technology. Throughout the book, more examples, questions and problems have been included, and several figures and tables have been added to better illustrate the text.

I tried to make Winter's Child a stand-alone read as much as I possibly could, but it IS about someone you meet toward the end of Aislin of Arianrhod.  This book will make more sense if you read Aislin of Arianrhod first.  Winter's Child occurs 29 years before Aislin.

Fast paced twisting plot!

This is a great story with unique creatures and a twisting plot. Cara Tanner is an independent woman now that her parents have died and left her the family farm. Cara has many people relying on her ability as a farm manager for their survival. When her home is overrun and she discovers that she has been deeded to Rafe Samuelson for services rendered to King Boru, her world is turned upside down. Rafe is a mercenary who knows nothing about farming and hates that he was paid in "property" (which includes Cara and all the farm hands) instead of gold. The story takes off from there with many plot twists, lots of suspense, danger, and character growth. Cara must determine how relevant it is for her to discover who she really is and how important her heritage is while she tries to keep peace between Rafe and the farm hands. Rafe must decide if he can forgo running his unhappy life with mercenary tactics and become a respectable human being by dealing with issues from his past. This story weaves a web of deceit and mystery as Cara and Rafe decide if they can survive together. This was a great story I really enjoyed reading! i can't wait to read the next book in the series. I don't think you need to read the first book Ailslin or Arianrhod before this book to enjoy the world of Arianrhod.

It's a page-turner.

Winters Child is a really good book. The story is engaging and full of secrets, betrayal, fear, desire, treachery, loyalty, survival, creatures and more. I found it to be darker than the first book and must say I enjoyed book one, more. Perhaps because of the "other" kind and being given a bigger glimpse into "their" world.

If you've not read book one, yet; I suggest starting with book two, because the author went back to write about things that happened in the past of some of the key characters in book one.

This book has sexual content, swearing and abuse of women.

Well-written with a compelling plot

I loved this story from start to finish. It had a strong, fiery heroine; the requisite alpha male with a soft side, and lots of side characters to keep things entertaining. There was a lot here beyond the romance. The story was set in a fantasy realm with lots of kingdoms with competing interests. The story was nicely paced and a satisfying read. I'll pick up another S.L Jesberger for sure!

About the Author

Vidar Lerum is an Associate Professor at the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. He teaches design studios and design seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His teaching experience includes design studios exploring the path to net zero energy building design, design seminars addressing minimalism in the age of conspicuous consumption, and environmental control systems courses. Lerum's research focuses on energy performance, human comfort and user satisfaction in buildings. He is a licensed architect in Norway and a member of the Norwegian Society of Architects (NAL). He is also a Co-opted Committee Member of the CIBSE Heritage Group and an International Associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

About the Author

Peter Cook is the founder of Archigram, the former Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), London and previous Professor of Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. A pivotal figure within the global architectural world for over half a century, in 2007 he was knighted by The Queen for his services to architecture. A Royal Academician, he is a Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic. He is currently a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art, London. Professorships include those at the Royal Academy, University College London and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Lund University in Sweden. Cook is, with Colin Fournier, the architect of the Kunsthaus Graz. He is a director of CRAB Studio in London with Gavin Robotham, which is currently building the new Law Faculties and Central Administration Buildings for Vienna University and the Soheil Abedian School of Architecture for Bond University in Australia.

A few decent pictures in a sea of babble

To start with, let me clarify that this is not a book about architectural drawing. It is a book about rendering ideas visually using every type of media you can imagine. So for every example of a drawing there are about ten examples of paintings, models, and an abundance of the typical modern 3D models gone horribly wrong. Add to this Cook's inability to clearly state any point, and you have a pretty bad example of an architectural drawing book.

Here's a quick example of the kind of twisted verbosity you'll have to wade through while reading this book:

"If it is the recurrent thesis of this book that drawing - of every kind - is a motor that absorbs imagination and converts it into usable or transferable information or inspiration, thus self-consciousness is but another form of evaluation."

Ignore the terrible structuring and obvious lack of logical thinking, and you get a statement about how drawing is a way to capture and transfer information. And this was one of Cook's attempts to clarify himself! You can only imagine how badly the rest of the book reads.

I found that Cook's attempt is just an exercise in pretentious slog of the type you'd hear spewing from some theorist's mouth at a black-tie exhibit. There are comparatively few visual examples given for the volume of text, and some examples are profoundly worthwhile (Arthur Beresford Pite, Neil Denari, Hans Poelzig) while the vast majority simply are not.

This is my second attempt at reading an Architectural Design (AD) series book and trying to make sense of it or find anything useful to take away from it. Both attempts have been failures. I have a third one coming, and I'm now starting to really worry about it.

Visual Notes for Architects and Designers by Norman Crowe and Paul Laseau
Architects' Sketchbooks by Will Jones and Narinder Sagoo

The first book is an excellent primer on the reasoning and methods behind visually rendering ideas and observations. The second book is a compendium of architectural renderings, mostly in crude form, showing the formation of ideas without letting the book's text get in the way. Go forth, learn, and be inspired. And if you want vacuous babble then there's plenty of that online, so there's no need to buy this book.

Author's Writing Style Poses Challenges

I was intrigued with the idea behind this book--"the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture." Unfortunately, I found the text extremely difficult to understand without reading every sentence a couple of times! This was truly disappointing. I finally just gave up and glanced through the images which really wasn't that useful since they don't mean as much when it is so difficult to understand the accompanying text.

I do think there is a small select group of people who may enjoy and benefit from this book. I'm just not in that group.

Good pictures - but text is a doublethink nightmare.

Although this book includes some interesting drawings, the text is a convoluted, un-inspiring doublethink nightmare. I found a few of the drawings to be very interesting, but when I looked into the text to see why the author included them, there was nothing of interest. Check it out in a library before adding this one to your own.
