Important work.

Important work. Finally some truth in the subject of Canaanite history and the rational analysis of the history of the region without having it just be a story canvassed by The Cult of Yahweh. Why has it taken so long to shed rational light on Levantine history outside the fairy tales of Yahwehists ( Christians, Muslims,...). This book is like pulling the rug from under Afro-Centrists who seek to see the history of the world from only their angle.

Bravo! Hopefully one day the true true history of the region will be known and its rich polytheistic traditions gain the attention they rightly deserve, and should have been given all along.

If you like historiography...

I recommend "The Invention of Ancient Israel" to anyone interested in how history is researched and written. It's more about historiography--the study of historical writing--than about history per se, although it includes much of the latter as a necessary consequence.

To everyone interested in this book--pro or con--I also highly recommend Prof. Hayden White’s work. Here are a few more quotes from Prof. White relevant to Prof. Whitelam’s themes:

From the article “The Burden of History,” in the journal “History and Theory,” Vol 5. No. 2:

"We choose our past in the same way we choose our future. The historical past therefore, is, like our various personal pasts, at best a myth, justifying our gamble on a specific future, and at worst a lie, a retrospective rationalization of what we have become through our choices."

"Historical systems differ from biological systems by their capacity to act as if they could choose their own ancestors."

Employing a Foucauldian geneology of history, Whitelam finally exposed the reproduction of truths biblical scholars have resorted to in an attempt to bestow legitimacy on their cause. Although, I read the book in Arabic, I felt compelled to comment on the original version and commend Whitelam's systematic and scientific methodology in exposing the myths that shroud the existence of the Zionist movement. Whitelam clearly draws a lot from Said's efforts in Orientalism furthuring the need to situate biblical discourse in the context of imperialism and colonial discourses. It is enough to remember that Israeli historians themsevles are beginning to question the body of 'knowledge' that was created during the course of the 20th century especially in light of the archeological discoveries that have failed to lend credence to the claim an ancient Israeli kingdom existedin the West Bank. In fact, all discoveries so far are corroborating the version of history that stipulates the existence of an Arab and Philistine socieities at the end of the Iron age and the early Bronze agg. The old testement itself contains many contradictions in relation to the manufactured history of the Zionists which served as the main source for biblical reconstructions of history.

GET OUT THE LYSOL, FOLKS! THIS ONE REALLY STINKS!

This book stinks. It really does. In addition to being completely implausible, it is an insult to one's intelligence. In an nutshell, the protagonist has a son in college and a daughter in high school. The son allegedly commits suicide and she flies to upstate N.Y. to get the scoop on why. Her boorish Neanderthal of a husband refuses to invest any feelings toward the deceased son nor will the rat fly with her. Once airborne, Sarah meets Detective Aldo Diamond (just happens to be sitting near a sleuth) who agrees to help her crack the case. To really add stupidity into the mix, there is a quasi-gothic character (or should one say "characters") who pose as triplet brothers who work at the college. Bottom line is, it's one demented man behind the triplet charade. After some inept sleuthing and implausible scenes, Sarah learns that there is a high suicide rate at the college due to the school's shadowy history.
Don't waste your time, folks. This book is really a bust with nothing to recommend it. You'd do better watching television instead.

I didn't care if Sarah lived or died.

This is the story of a mother who lost a child and her trip to unravel why he died. The lead character was never filled out enough to elicit any real emotion from the reader. She was not consistent with the very brief character description in the beginning of the book. This lady was an assistant DA, yet once her son committed suicide she never used any of the characteristics that a GOOD DA would have. She was a basket case most of the way through. Logic was a word she didn't understand. By the end of the book I really didn't care what happened to her.
The only sympathetic character in the book was Diamond, an obese man who was eating himself to death over guilt about the death of his family. He tried to help Sarah and save her from harm. At the end I was very happy that he "was not hungry" and you knew he was going to get his life back together.
Unless you have nothing to do or are really bored and want something to add to that boredom don't read this one.

Don't waste your time!

After reading one book by Judith Kelman, I thought I would give her a second chance and try another. I didn't possibly think that another could be as bad as the first. I was wrong. Where Shadows Fall is an insult to suspenseful romantic mystery readers everywhere. To start, the relationship between the two major characters in the book is developed hastily and unbelievably. The murder or suicide plot is weak at best and everything surrounding it is just words on a page. Laboring through this leads to a ridiculous ending that arrived 338 pages too late.

The aim of the collection is to provide a series of critical essays that cover some of the most important topics and contexts relevant to studying and understanding His Dark Materials in the form of the novels and as a dramatic adaptation. In contrast to existing books on His Dark Materials, this collection consist of original critical essays which offer a wider range of more sophisticated responses to the trilogy of novels that respond to existing literary criticism on Philip Pullman and which are firmly based upon research and in the main from established literary critics, rather than specialists in children's literature. Overall, the collection aims to engage with a greater range of issues and contexts and with more critical acuity than currently exists in the field of studies of His Dark Materials and to aid high school, undergraduate and graduate students who wish to engage in a sophisticated fashion with Pullman's important trilogy of novels.

Excellent for students, teachers and Pullman fans

This is a hugely interesting read. I came across this book as a Pullman enthusiast primarily, but there are a range of essays within it to suit a variety of audiences. The chapters in the first section are especially good for anyone interested in young adult literature, such as teachers or librarians. I'm an English teacher and the book has been passed around my colleagues with great interest. Anyone who managed to see the amazing stage versions of the play at the National Theatre in London will enjoy the last section of the book. I'd recommend this book for anyone who has read and loved 'His Dark Materials', anyone who is interested in children's literature and anyone with an interest in literature and theatre. Of course, for die-hard fans this book is one that must be added to the collection.
