Gr 1-3-This series entry covers the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of August 28, 1963, and includes a brief historical perspective on the segregation and discrimination that preceded this event. One high point is the excellent and easy-to-understand description in words and pictures of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Ruffin's clear, readable text is a fine example of how short, simple sentences can be used effectively to tell a complex story. A good model for nonfiction picture books, this title uses numerous informative illustrations to supplement a spare but factual text. Frances Rufin did a wonderful job capturing the spirit of August 28th

Frances Rufin did a wonderful job capturing the spirit of August 28th, 1963 when Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial to more than 250,000 people. This book is a perfect read aloud to share with elementary age students when covering Civil Rights, Black History Month, or just to be inspired by the actions of a determined group of people hungry for change.

As a former K/1 teacher, current 3rd grade teacher, this book is perfect for explaining how, what, why providing enough detail and allowing for inference.
Lots of great questions arise.
Also with the 50th anniversary, it is very timely.
I tell 'em making history, living history. Here we are!!

This book has all of the details needed for a young student or and elder person. It has graphics for a young student to image what it was like or an elder to reminiscence. I will use this book with many groups that I work with.
